Hey everyone, I’m new to coyote hunting and looking for some help breaking down a couple public land spots. I hunted deer here this season, saw a coyote and lots of tracks. I’ve included maps and photos of each area with color-coded dots to show where each picture was taken. I’ve also added track photos to confirm ID.

AREA 1 – (Green, Red, Yellow) - Rifle or shotgun
🟢 Green: Cedars
• cedar cover with 40–60 yard sightlines max.
• Lots of tracks but no obvious trails theyre taking.
• some human traffic on trails but there are less trails here so its easier to get away from them.

🔴 Red: Hardwoods
• More open, some human traffic And trails
• I did see a coyote once cutting across the field to the south from my deer stand (out of bow range)
• Not much sign otherwise.

🟡 Yellow: Thicker mixed woods with walking trails
• More human and dog activity.
• Still seems to have consistent coyote tracks slightly off the main trails and following trails.

AREA 2 – (White, Blue)

⚪ White: Long cleared hydro cut
• Haven’t been here with snow on the ground to check for tracks
• Long sightlines, possible good area but shotgun only

🔵 Blue: Field edge with track sign
• Lots of something walking the perimeter.
• I put bait and a camera here to see what’s coming through.
• This area is shotgun and bow only, so I’d be set up close on the edge of the woods.

TRACK QUESTIONS
I included a close-up track photo and a straight line of tracks in the snow. Are these definitely coyote? Oval shape and the straight path and gate look like it from what I've seen.

MY PLAN
Right now I’m thinking:
• Keep bait at the blue spot (just inside woods in a slightly more open area with abiut 40 yard sightline to bair), see if the camera shows consistent times.
• Set up a few yards inside the woods with the wind blowing towards the open field
• i can also try calling setups in the hydro cut (shotgun only so no rifle) and the cedar area (rifle allowed)?
Any advice on how to hunt these areas more effectively would be appreciated especially for public land.

Thanks!

There's a whole lot to go through here so it's hard to formulate an answer but one thing I'm seeing that stands out in all of them is visibility.
I would be hunting the woods that offer some form of ability to see what's coming in. Try to setup in such a way that you can see the downwind as well as in front of you for as far as you can with the location constraints.
In woods like that try to setup with a natural game trail or path leading towards your location. It's far from foolproof but if your lucky and a coyote is confident coming in it will sometimes use natural trails.

Yeah i know its a lot of info. I felt there was a lot to share here to give others the best idea of the areas to see where is best to hint and how to do it. The woods definitely isnt ideal for coyotes it seems

Ahhhh Ontario hunting!

As stated, make sure you can see down wind! They like to circle down wind. Dawn and dusk. Sit just inside the brush.
My idea is to sit about 30 yards from the bait. A small clearing on the edge of the field where I put it with my camera on the bait. Hoping for a crosswind blowing into the field to either make them circle into the field to get downwind, or make them hesitant to cycle downwind into the open. I should be able to see them either come directly in or if they circle.

Doing this, I have a ground blind. Should I use it or just sit with a big tree or thick cover to my back?

Going to try to get permission to hunt a farmers land as well.

I normally sat along the edge of the wood, I found in SWO they stay to low areas and like to skirt along the edge in and out of the woods while approaching (usually) from down wind. I normally sat on a ground blind. Most of my yotes where under 100 yards (I was to itchy to let them have it) I would put my bait/call out into the middle of the field to encourage them out of the trees. I always tried to make sure it was 50 yards or more away. Ideally so they dont see the movement of me readying my rifle to shoot. Focused out in the field on that flicky tail like thing lol

Too many people focus too much on imagining where an animal will pop out and give you a shot. They envision that magical shot and/or photo opportunity and do not let go of THE shot that they believe will happen. This often leads to going home empty handed.

Just get out there and hunt. They’re coyotes and have no problem covering a couple hundred yards quickly and will pop out wherever they want regardless of how much planning you do.

You’re really overthinking this one. 👍

I always try to be in the tall grass/snow banks on the edge of woods and fields. Cover is always good, expect em from anywhere. I had one come in from behind me almost and by the time I even saw him he caught my scent and saw my decoy was fake and effed off real fast. Didn't even have a shot. Scatter gun may have given a chance.
