Hi guys,

I know its early but my buddy and I are looking for an area for deer hunting. (fall 2010) . We just want to have an area so we can get are thing together. We are 30 year old, knowledgeable hunters. We will only be able to hunt weekends most likely. P.M.me if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks
Aaron

Start by reading the hunting regulations. That will set out the firearm or primitive weapons' seasons. Then find the statistics for previous years' harvests. The more the merrier. Next get some topographic maps (not the internet kind) to help choose your general area. If you find an area you like, Google or Bing Maps will identify ground cover and other factors. Then start driving the roads and looking.

Ya that's the problem we are new to hunting in the Ottawa area. There really isn't much
crown land. Might have to talk to some farmers or something like that.

Don't waste your time with Marlborough or Larose, unless you enjoy competing with the blaze orange army for a couple weeks. Your best plan is to find a farm your best bet on that front is to wait until late summer and find a few likely places and start knocking on doors and prepared to be told no. I have had many people say not this year then call me the next and say come on over.

Seems a door knocking campaign, in the Winchester region rural farmland, is in his future.

Offering to take care of groundhogs through the summer, is how I have access to one dairy farm in the Finch area... The farmer wants the groundhogs GONE, and I get two things back in return, field time for hogs & "other" game...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Sometimes, starting small means the farmer is comfortable with you & allows you to have "other" access, say for deer or turkeys...

Door to door is probably best, especially if you can only hunt weekends (Marlborough is ridiculous on the weekends during deer season, not as bad during the week). Also, its alot easier to get access if you bowhunt. Be prepared to get shot down ALOT. Most people who are open to hunters already have someone hunting there.

Print your info on some business card stock and leave it with them. You may get a call at some point.

Well - You should decide if you want to join a hunt camp. The benefit is that you are on a private piece of land, and you get the benefit of party hunting and experience. The downside is that you have to contribute time and/or money.
If you're just a recreational day hunter, then do as above with farms, or head west past Renfrew, theres a lot more vacant land there.

If you're going to ask farmers for permission...START NOW!!!

If you are prepared to do some physical work: pick stones, cut brush, split firewood...etc., it should not be that difficult to find a farmer that needs a helping hand.

Plan on more than a few hours work also...3-4 days of labour throughout the summer should seal the deal. (in high demand areas)

Who knows...you might even enjoy farming. :)

It might also help if you find farmers who'd like coyote problems taken care of. Should be lots of places looking to lower their numbers in Winchester - Vernon area.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help. All great ideas. I don't mind a little hard work that's for sure. Shooting gophers and coyotes would be more like practice than work that's the best part.
