Good day CGNers.

I have installed a new, longer barrel on a restricted rifle (one that got away from prohibition for now) and starting the process of getting my rifle from restricted to non-restricted. I called the Firearms program and she told me that i needed to have the firearm verified...

Anybody been thru this before, what's your experience?

Anybody can recomment an ''Approved'' verifier in the Ottawa - Gatineau area?

The lady also told me that i needed to have the old barrel destroyed. I feel this is a bit overreaching since a barrel is just a piece of metal. But again, we all know that overreaching is not uncommon in Canada.

I never done that, i welcome your input - experience.

Thanks

Memnoch

I rebarrelled a Prohib Luger and had it reclassified by contacting these people: Firearmident@rcmp-grc.gc.ca

I did not require a verified or any paperwork, and everything was done by phone and email. I believe I phoned them and opened a case, then submitted the necessary proof via email with the case# attached.

There is no legal requirement to destroy a rifle barrel. Only a detached under 105mm handgun barrel is a prohibited device.

I had a reply from the Tech guys. the process is initiated.

Thank you very much. This is exactly what i was looking for.

I’m a verifier in the London Ontario area. Normally the rifle is brought to me, or I meet someone at the club.
I was issued a crappy cleaning rod, tape measure and other little items by the lab.
I measure the barrel, and compare it to the current FRTs. I photograph the firearm.
Then fill out the paperwork and submit it and the photos via email.
If the barrel length already exists, it’s usually faster and easier.
If a new barrel entry needs to be created, I usually get an email back asking for barrel info. Who made it, where was it purchased, etc.
There is no notification sent when the process is complete, this is annoying. You need to call in every week and ask the agent to search for your firearm in their registry. When they can’t find an entry, the process has been completed.

Ok the CFC lady was quite unsure of what to say. She was basically reading her ''employee handout'' to me! She probably had no clue what she was talking about.

Thanks.

Everytine I have needed to verify I firearm I did it myself while I was on the phone with the call centre individual. All of them are all certified verifiers. They walk you through the flow chart of questions, you provide info as necessary. Done.

I didnt think the independant un paid network of verifiers created to facilitate registration at the start of c68 was still a thing.

If she is reading a handbook, hasnt been updated since the invention of digital cameras and email?

I would echo that endeavour. I had to call in a G43 cert back when these things had to be done for compliance. I had the rifle, some measurements, and notes on what I thought it was. Called the 1 800 we-know-guns number and got going. The fellow on the other end took his time because of the search functions on the FRT. When we were happy with the markings and other chit chat, he issued the certificate.

Yep, so far, the tech required pictures:

-Pictures of all markings.
-Pictures of barrel with measuring tape.

As of good measure i also included lots of pictures of both sides, receiver etc... I also included a snap shot of the manufacturer's barrel description.

The waiting game has started. i will have to call once in a while to find out when this is removed from the evil list…

Cheers!
