Looking for flexible a pistol

Not the pistol but the application :D

I'm looking for a pistol which can be used (doesn't matter the class). Stock without massive modification for PPC, IPSC, IDPA.

I`m uncertain about where my interest lays at this time I have seen PPC and IPSC and watched a few videos on IDPA. I just wanted to pick up a single pistol to practice with that would work for all three later on down the road depending on where my interest ends up. I was original considering a revolver in .357 mag but I have lost interest in the revolver at this point. So I`m looking for something in 9MM. Cost being the biggest issue.
Basically I wanted to put together a short list of pistols to look at.

Now to be fair, the CZ SP01 Shadow with the aluminum grips should also make the weight limit in IDPA.

I don't shoot IDPA, but I believe I read that the division that the Shadow is most suitable in, it's slightly fat for the rule book. Wiser minds will likely reply.
 
I am not an IDPA Expert by any means, but I do believe it needs a bit more work to make the Weight requirement than just the grips. This assumes that you will be shooting sanctioned matches....otherwise, there are a number of people that use them. Probably be just as well served with a CZ75/85, and avoid any hassles, and not give up too much, IMHO

No the Shadow won't make weight (39oz) with the Aluminum grips. You can order Dennis Marshall grips from Hungry and replacing the mag brake with an lighter version designed for the CZ75B that will. That said, I have the Shadow and CZ85 and frankly the CZ 85 Combat is slightly lighter, balances better IMHO and is as good a choice as the Shadow for IDPA.

If I was starting out I would take a hard look at either the S&W M&P in 9MM or Glock 17. Both can be had for around $620, less used. Both guns work well enough in IPSC Production or IDPA SSP or ESP Divisions. As a new shooter to both sports it will be sometime before your skill level matches the capabilities of the gun so I wouldn't get to hung up on equipment.

Both the M&P and Glock sell well used so you won't be out much money if you decide either or both sports are not for you. Get a Blade Tec holster and a couple of mag holders and you should be good to go. For IPSC you will need a minimum of five mags, for IDPA four is all you require. Two on your belt, one for the gun and a Barney mag for topping up your pistol.

With the combinations listed above you should be good to go for both sports. Pick one or both. Both are a lot of fun.

ps I should add the Shadow has a full length dustcover and therefore has to make weight for SSP Division (39oz) to play IDPA by rule. A NIB Shadow weighs 41.1 oz with a mag in it. Weight will vary a tenth or so due to the difference in weight of the empty mags.

For an overweight Shadow you don't get to play as the gun would be illegal for all Divisions.

If a competitor registers for SSP and during the Sanctioned match his Shadow is found to be overweight for SSP the he would receive a DQ.

If on the otherhand he came to the Sanctioned match with a gun that did not have a full length dustcover and was overweight for SSP but otherwise met the weight limit and all conditions for ESP then he would be moved to ESP and be allowed to continue to play. Some of the older S&W semi-autos weigh over 39oz and are shot in ESP Divison as they make weight for that division.

For local club events most MD's would allow a shooter with an overweight Shadow to finish the club match; shooting not for score... once.

I started off with a Glock 17.....I now have a GP6, it was a toss up for me between the CZ and the GP6. The CZ is a good pistol, but combined with what has already been stated about the weight issues for IDPA, the STI won out, in no small part to STI's Warranty. The Canadian Importer:

does a wonderful job of servicing what they sell. It is nice to know help for parts is a phone call away if it is needed. You can't really say that about Glock, S&W or CZ!
 
Now that has me swinging that way. Nothing I hate more then trying to deal with my local people Granted I'm still trying to find one shop in Hamilton I've gone down there three times but never found it and the only other place the service is all over the place and I do mean all over if the owners in they are great if he's not they SUCK but they don't sell handguns anyway.

Any one know a fool proof way (man do I need this) to get to Al Simmons Gun shop either from Mississauga or from the BRRC. My knowledge of Hamilton is well bad.

Well that might be true for S&W to some extent but certainly not for Glock which is carried all over the place. Similarly CZ has a good stock of parts in Canada.

That said every shooter should gather a stock of parts for their competition guns.

As for servicing CZs. CRAFM in Montreal is now an official CZ warranty provider.

I guess I am talking about more Warranty replacement.....If a part breaks on a Glock or CZ what type of Warranty/replacement program do they have in place, and how quick of a turn around is there?

:redface: I used map quest and again it lead me astray same as the direction to silverdale. I just recently discovered the google street picture thing. Hadn't though to use it to help find land marks
