Looking for good, light 12-gauge shotgun?

I'm looking to buy my first shotgun. I really liked the lightest guns I've shot the most (not aware of the models), so I was looking for one of the lightest guns I could find.
I really don't mind a mean kick. A couple bruises on the shoulder never killed anyone. What I really liked about the lighter shotguns was that it was easy to point-at-target-quickly, and hold it steady.
I'm a bit new to shooting shotguns, and I may or may not use it for hunting, but it would definitely be used as a defense gun against Bears etc. What are some things I have to look out for? Quality/maintenance, accuracy, durability? I.E., what are the main qualities that separate a "good" shotgun from a "crappy" one?
I'm looking for a 12-gauge (possibly a 20-gauge), and I'm undecided on barrel length, but probably single-barrel. I'm interested in both Auto and Pump shotguns.
My price range is around $400-$700, but I'll go up to $1000 for a perfect fit. Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Sincerely,

Luke.

i shot a browing silver semi 12g for a while and as nice as it was i went back to my tried and true break barrel singles. light and simple.

This has less to do with the weight of the gun and more with how that particular model fit you. Find out what that gun was instead, otherwise this is just a wild goose chase.

It is extremely over looked but the Mossberg Maverick 88 Shotguns are around $250, extremely reliable and weigh next to nothing!

You should handle one just to try it and rule it out.
