Where is a good place to buy cheap .223rem. I am not looking for superb accuracy, but somethign decent I can get used to shooting centrefire with.

I am thinking I am going to go with UMC FMJ as it seems to be the cheapest, but am not sure where I can order it from for a good price, or picking it up would be even better within or near the niagara region.

Also, if it's going to be used in a Savage 12FV, should I steer clear of those lacquered steel casings by Wolf etc? I hear it can wear my chamber or something along those lines.

Thanks!!!

I too was in the WalMart here just today and saw the 40pk of 223. They had 2 types. Both are varmint type with 45gr bullets but one was in 3600fps velocity and the other was showing 4000fps..Not that those numbers are highly accurate, but they were Winchester bulk packs and were selling for I believe $18 for the 3600 and $22 for the 4000..
Didnt pay too much attn to it but this was the first time I had seen them in that quantity in Wallyworld in Canada.
Cheers

You probably already know this, but I would strongly suggest buying small quantities until you find something suitable for your rifle (just like rimfire!). My Savage 10fp throws 3" groups at 100 yards with AmEagle 55gr. FMJ's, but dimed sized groups at the same distance with AmEagle 50gr. HP's.

If you are doing mail order then check out Russell Sports, or SIR, or somewhere that you can buy a dozen boxes of assorted brands/bullet weights. If I had bought a thousand rounds of the AmEagle FMJ's, I would be some pissed off cause shooting 3" groups with that rifle just ruins my day.

My 12BVSS shoots 0.5" or better with the Winchester 45gr HP in the bulk 40round pack <$16.00. Very decent accuracy up to 300M if it isn't too windy. The stuff really is quite hot so I tend to believe the 3600fps.

Icq,
I chronographed some .223 White-box a couple days ago at 3500 fps in a 26" barreled Rem VLS. I like to make sure that my finicky chrono is working before firing the handloads of interest. There will be some variation from lot to lot, but it probably would be close to 3600 on a hot summer day. The 4000 fps stuff is 22/250 and usually comes in at 100-150 slow. It's all good if your rifle likes them, I have 2 that do and one that doesn't. The brass is decent.

Hi,

I have also just purchased a 12 FV in .223. I have been experimenting with various factory loads and compiled a spread sheet with the price and group size with various factory loads...

I can't figure out how to up load it to this forum... but if you message me, I'll be happy to e-mail it to anyone who wants it...
