Looking for Hard-core 45-70 Loads to keep the furries from muching me!

The only powder I use in the 45-70 now is H322.

The Bullet Barn are great people to deal with my favorite bullet from them is their 405gr RNFP GC TLG I have shot hundreds of these from 1600fps - over 2000fps.

When it comes to the best cast bullets out there I would go with Jae-Bok Young WLNGC 550gr Crater's = I load these to 1580fps & 420gr Crater Lite's = to 1980fps and from what I understand he will still ship too Canada.

So I drank the kool-aid and I am now petrified of anything with fur and tooth when I am in the woods. So after reading all of the posts in every bear defense thread possible I have come to realize that every man that has ever survived a brush with a wild mammal has only done it with a horse shoe crammed in .......
if they didn't have a 45-70.
This epiphany that I had convicted me to buy the first 45-70 Guide Gun I could find without that ear-busting porting. The gentleman I bought it from has it in transit to me as we, uh, type. w:h:
So now I need to hear from the guru's; I want a hard hitting load with bullet weight in the 350-450gr range. If it happens to be a cast bullet that isn't purchasable, please offer to make me some if your going to tease me with it. :D

not to get off topic but i have to ask, did somthing brown and furry with teeth try to make you his lunch:D:D:D

Bullet Barn 405 grain hard-cast gas checked bullet.

Some of the .458 bullets that I load/shoot in my 45-70's

left to right

150gr JRN .308 far left for standard
300gr Spitzer Alpha Lafrank
300gr Hornady HP
350gr Swift A-Frame
405gr Beartooth GC
405gr Spitzer Alpha Lafrank
425gr Beartooth WLNGC
430gr Cast Performance WLNGC
450gr Barnes TSX
550gr Jae-Bok Joung "Crater" WLNGC
525gr Beartooth WLNGC

and of course I only load the spitzer bullets in single shots or load directly into the chamber.

If I only had access to one bullet to use for everything it would be the 350gr A-Frame.

I have both... :D

My 45-70 goes into the local hills where there are no grizzlies and the 375RUM goes everywhere else...

Where does one find the MT Chambers bullets?

So with the 18.5" barrel should I expect to see 1600fps with a 480gr?

I load for my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with 550gr Craters @ 1580fps & 525gr Piledrivers @ 1600fps and these are not top loads just were I decided to stop so I'm thinking it wouldn't be very hard to get a little 480gr bullet to 1600fps... :D

You don't have to get 1800, but you can, without much work or danger. I actually perfer to run them at 1600, much more comfortable to shoot for me. I carry the gas checked ones, loaded to 1800 as bear stoppers, but they rattle my teeth too much to shoot all the time.

I contacted the outfit that makes the oversized loop levers, they don't sell them out of the USA for the time being so tough . . .

Sooo, I should break out the welder and some steel then? I may just call Western Gun Parts.

I think I may just go with the Bullet Barn 405 GC TLG and push them to 1700-1800fps. I am sure they'll work just fine;)
And I'll look for a good mold and a pot.

So anyone have some picks of critters they destroyed with these crater makers?

Ok so I didn't shoot it with the Marlin that is loaded with 525gr Piledrivers but this is the rifle I carried when I went into the thick bush after it... :)

Shot it with a Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM loaded with 300gr Partitions @ 2775fps.

I've been playing with different 45-70 loads for the last six months and found some really accurate loads that also pack a nice thump.

Ben Hunchack 480gr Bullet I load at 42.6grs of Reloader 7 (awesome powder for 45-70) for 1600fps

Bullet Barns 405gr GC bullet I load with 43grs of IMR 4198 for 1800 fps

For plinking loads I use the same 405gr bullet with 46.5grs of Varget for 1400 fps. I'm not really a huge fan of Varget in this caliber, there is always a ton of unburned powder down the barrel. Its a nice accurate load, just really dirty.

Hope this helps, welcome to loading for an awesome caliber.

Just found this here is my load data...

H322 is my favorite powder for my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with Win LR primers and crimp with a Lee factory crimp die I load...
