Looking for help on value of a Merkel side by side

I have a buddy that's planning on selling it, but has no idea where to start on price. It's 12g with 28" barrels and extractors - still tight as a new gun, which makes me wonder if it's seen any/much use at all. I believe it has the 1st qaulity stamp (stylized Q and 1) on the barrel lug - I have to double check though. From what I've read I'm guessing the "1178" on the barrel is production date - November 1978. I have no clue on the model number or what it's worth - any help would be appreciated.

I would peg its value at around $450-500.
I purchased a Merkel that is extremely similar to this one a year ago from TRADEX for $450.

Merkel makes a good quality shotgun, the higher grades go for thousands. That one should be worth between $600-$800 being a 20 gauge and all. Can someone tell me why the Germans insist on putting a cheekpiece and sling swivels on a nice double. Those are two abortions that should never be seen on an upland gun.

Not just the Germans. I have a few Brno's that all have the cheek piece and swivels. But you know, while I would prefer them without the cheek piece, I don't mind them.

I would take 10 at that price. Merkels are quality Guns and are over built. Not everyone needs 3" shells or Choke tubes for that matter.

I think the OP said it's a 12, not a 20.

This should be the area that it would sell in. Of course it all depends on the day and what someone is looking for. I am also one of those that when it comes to SxS's, I could care less if it has a 3" chamber or screw in chokes. For me, the older the double the better. But everyone has a personal preference.

Even a 12 gauge in the condition shown should be around a $600.00 gun. But what should be and what is, is sometimes an entirely different matter.

Good condition European doubles seem to go for around 500$ around here, seen Merkels and Mint BRNO's go for that. They sit for quite a while though, most people have never heard of them and want choke tubes.

The older "collectors" are not driving the market like they used to.....

Do the East German Merkels not draw less money then newer guns made after the wall came down? Seems to me that quality went way up as did prices, on models made after communism ended there!
