Howdy folks,

Shot in the dark here,

Few years ago I was walking a cut line and ran into another good fella, we were talking about our sticks and he had a scope that only illuminated a red dot where the cross hairs met. Anyone familiar with what brand and model makes a scope like this? Looking for a new scope and thought I’d try and find the one he had or similar. It was a few years ago so can’t remember magnification but ideally looking for 3-12/15 4-18 or something similar

Cheers

leupold firedot or trijicon accupoint dot duplex

trijicon accupoint use fiberoptic and do not have batteries, much like an archery sight the fiber optic brings in ambient light and amplifies it so no matter the conditions the dot glows brighter, even on snow on sunny day while coyote hunting (blinding conditions) the dot still shows up brighter, and the dot illuminates to 10 to 15 minutes past legal light which for most places to hunt is considered 30 minutes past sunset (or 30 min before sunrise), the dot will still illuminate to 40-45 minutes past sunset or before sunrise for example

I've run leupold most of my life but now my main hunting scope is the trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 green dot duplex or green mil-dot duplex...green is very nice, with leupold you only get red but like archery sights green is actually most visible to most. You can choose red or yellow with trijicon also. I don't like batteries. The trijicon is also better image quality and brightness than the leupold 1" tube options. But you'll pay over $1000 to get one, well worth it, best hunting scope going imo. You can get Kenton industries speed dial turrets for them if you like dial up solutions for distance or just get the mil-dot for some additional hold over points you can learn. The dial up is nice then you are always using that beautiful illuminated dot! It's very fast and intuitive for hunting also, it has become my favourite feature.

Burris has a couple. I have Fullfield 3-12 x 56 for my dark woods first light/last light rifle and there is a Fullfield IV 3-12x42 illuminated as well. Leupold has a fire dot for a few more dollars

There are several brands that have what you describe, at many different price points. Minox, Zeiss, swaro, Leica make them too.

I really like the minox, particularly the 1-5x24. Excellent glass and good bang for the buck at that price point. The dot is daylight bright. 1x has no distortion and it's like using a red dot. They have a 2-10x50 and 3-15x56 if you aren't bothered by the large objective.
Go big tactical, a site sponsor sells them.

Yes, sadly the Leupold VX-R is discontinued, but there are several other VX-3, 5 and 6HD models that offer the Firedot illuminated reticle. I quite like them and have 3 Leupolds with the illuminated reticle; 2 Firedots and the illuminated B&C reticle.

I also have a couple of Trijicons with the green reticle; 1 3-9x40 green dot crosshair and the 1-4x24 green triangle post. Also like these scopes. As stated above, do not require batteries.

For the power range you are looking for, you may want to look at the VX-5HD 3-15x44 or VX-6HD 3-18x50 Firedot scopes...with the VX-6HD being the higher end optic at a greater cost, and larger/more weight. (both are 30mm tubes)
Whereas the 1" shorter, lighter unit would be the VX-3HD 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 with the Firedot reticles - also less expensive.
