Looking for inexpensive .22lr bolt action to tinker and accurize.

Title basically said it all. Want a bolt action, not a semi. Detachable magazine is a must.

I've narrowed it down to a few models I liked and looking for some input, Some I have handled, but not shot, and some I have only seen pics online.
I want a .22lr I can put some glass on and use for accurate long range shooting. I've challenged some friends to a game of long range .22 battleship and I want to clean house, but do it inexpensively. I'm not looking for an olympic level $1K rifle. What's the fun in paying money for a perfect rifle when you could tinker?

Optics will come after, right now I need to decide on the gat.

Norinco JW25a. I like the Mauser repro look. I understand that mags are goign to be expensive, but I'd only want maybe 1 extra one.
Norinco NS522. Heard fantastic things about it for somebody who want to play with it and put some money and time into a nice shooter, Canadaammo is the only place I can see that sells it and they're OOS.
Savage MKII. The accutrigger is... weird. Especially on such a small bore, but if the rifle is worth it I'd be happy to spend the money, Crappy tire has it in stock locally which is a plus, but doesn't sell magazines. (but they should be simple to find and cheap)
Mossberg 817. So.. I nearly walked out of the store this morning with this one. They had 2 on sale. one with the wood stock and one with the weird looking plastic one with the thumbhole/pistol grip thing. Turns out its really comfortable and I really like it. Told the guy I'd buy it and got halfway through the paperwork before we realized we're dummies, and it's a .17 HMR not a .22LR. Embarassing.

Is there a .22 version of the 817? because that would be a real contender.

Any other good options in the $200 - $260 range I should be considering? Any on the list you wouldn't touch?

I HAVE a Winchester model 67, which is a fun gun, but It's old and kinda a clunky, despite being in very good shape I'd still think it has no potential for accuracy. I'll use it to teach my boys when they're old enough, but I don't know if it's worth it to try to doctor up. Thoughts?

Mossberg does make a similar model. I believe it's the 802. However if you want to win go savage. If you want something different look at trade ex rimfire section. Just read the description carefully
 
I've had a few C.I.L. 171's and they shot great for the money. I've had a couple of savage MK 11's and they shot great. Remington 550 was a nice tube fed semi-auto shooter. Plus I had several Marlin 60's and some of it's variants. They were great too. Actually now that I think of it, I haven't had too many duds in bolt or semi auto .22's.
Lots of good ones out there. Also, if you want a great super accurate gun that usually goes for between 2-300, look for a Mossberg 146. I had one that was amazing to shoot, and the peep site it had was second to none. But, my eyes are not great anymore, so I traded it for a scoped rimfire. Still miss it. It was the most accurate .22 I've ever owned.
 
zastavas are about 250-300 retail...very happy with mine and would buy another one if I found one

tinkered with the mags to get them to feed nicer, polished the feed ramp and edges of the mag....and adjusted the trigger to how I like it, my trigger has some side to side slop, not much but enough to bother me, want to get around to shimming that sooner or later
 
but if I was the OP, i'd get a savage, boyd's stock, some DIP parts and have fun with it, pretty easy to find parts and tinker with a savage
 
My buddy's zastava is very accurate but has extraction issues with some ammo.
No excuse for poor extraction on a .22lr bolt rifle.
 
kinneys shooting supply will ship DIP to Canada, but is hit or miss on what they have in stock, they are pretty good if you email them what you are looking for
 
Canadian made Savage MKII. Get one with a nice thumbhole stock and all you have to do is replace the tin foil bottom metal (local gunnut makes them)... accurate and solid rifles.
