Looking for inexpensive .22lr bolt action to tinker and accurize.

shiddy ammo I bet! take a look at how bad the projectiles are cast and if they have extra blobs of lead squished around the sides of the case... I was under the impression that target guns have tighter chambers.

1x more vote for a cheap Savage ---> FV-SR!

tinkered with the mags to get them to feed nicer, polished the feed ramp and edges of the mag....and adjusted the trigger to how I like it, my trigger has some side to side slop, not much but enough to bother me, want to get around to shimming that sooner or later

Where you buying new Zastavas for $250-300? I'd like to buy one in 17 HMR for that price. The average new price out this way is between $340 and $360 plus tax.

Have you actually put that 'ol 67 through it's paces? It's not impossible it'll outperform any new $200-$260 rifle...

Otherwise I'd recommend patience... There are many good shootin' bolt rimfires in that budget that are out there if you're looking n' have cash in hand.

I got mine in Grande Prairie, Alberta...I suppose prices likely increased since last November, our dollar is a lot worse...but sticker price was 299 and I got on sale for 249...definitely wish I bought a 17 or 22wmr along with my 22, a few minor tweaks but one of my favourite rifles now
 
I was skeptical at the time, first time I ever saw one...there was a gentleman there who told me to buy two or i'd regret it....hindsight is always 20/20 lol

I hear there is a deluxe model with higher grade wood? and obviously pricier, but haven't seen them advertised anywhere...I picked out the one that had the nicest wood out of about 7 or 8, some are pretty crappy but some are alright, if there was another one with nice figure I likely would've grabbed 2

I wish I saw those prices I would have bought one for sure. I have a 22 mag with amazing wood that shoots great too. I asked my local dealer to keep an eye out for something that was better than standard. I think I paid $299 for it about 3 years ago.
This is what they got me. This is like winning the lottery of Zastava stocks from what I've seen. I refinished the stock and still have to recut the checkering. I sanded the checkering off the forend because it had too many overruns on the lines.

that is an amazing piece of wood! the refinishing really brought the wood to life...I haven't refinished mine yet, but plan to over the winter...I have a strong side and a weak side, and original finish isn't doing the wood any favours

Very accurate shiddy ammo.
Shiddy extraction. As in make sure your aim is true or you will be reloading with a cleaning rod if you miss your rabbit.

Your stock will come to life if you redo it for sure. I think I used Minwax Special walnut for the stain on mine. I put 9 coats of True Oil on 2 weeks after the stain. I like to let them dry as long as I can to get a better bond with the finish.

I thought about that. I haven't shot the 67 wit anything but the meh factory open sights. The fit and finish on it leaves much to be desired. But I've never really properly benched it. It could really be a decent gun if played with properly, but I don't know what terrors it's gone through in its 60 year history. My dad but it for cheap from an RCMP about 10 odd years ago.
 
Learned to shoot on a 67 and 68 over 60 years ago. Put a Lyman 17 on the front of my 67 and a 68 receiver peep on the back ( didn't want to D&T or butcher the wood for a Lyman 57) and best to date on a 20 yd SFC 5 bull is a 95-5X ( Federal 714). Old eyes and trifocals and THAT long creepy stock mounted trigger don't help! IF you lap the trigger and sear slot, teflon shim the trigger to the centre of the sear and lube well ( and maybe thin the main spring) you may do better. I think you are on the right track considering a different rifle!!!
 
I picked up a used JW 15 (CZ knock off ) with a synthetic stock....as expected,the metalwork was not as finely finished but it shoots as well as my CZ.I put a Bushnell banner dusk to dawn shotgun/rimfire scope on it with the circle reticle and that's a fine small game set up,at 50 yards the circle is just the size of a rabbits head
 
I also just picked up a JW 15A compact (13" barrel), essentially a stumpy CZ 452 clone and tossed a cheap rimfire scope on it. Can't wait to try it out at the range tomorrow. If going by past experience with Norincos, it should respond well to tinkering and polishing.
 
All depends on intended use,how much money you want to ,or can spend..Norinco's aren't show pieces by a long shot but they work and are pretty accurate if you hold them straight. Not a bad choice if you are looking for basic 22 bolt action ,kind if like the modern day counterpart of a Cooey.
 
Ive got the mossberg International 802 with the pistol grip stock, simmons 3-9 22mag glass and an AR picatinny lightweight bipod.
Bought it because it felt great and shouldered like it was an extension of my arm, surprisingly shoots ragged holes at 75 yards.
For a budget 22 it fills the gap better than my norincos. Ten shot mags are a plus and the micro groove rifling looks identical to my marlin 795.
The only down side...no provisions for a sling?? WTF
 
you know, out of all these posts, almost nobody addresses the ability to 'tinker' with the said rifle, but for the mention of DIP accessories from Kinney's Shooting Supplies for Savage.

is there anyone out there with accessories for CZ's 455? I'd love to get a Varmint and tinker...
