Just recently picked up a near mint 303 jungle carbine dated 1945 . It has lettering on the left side if the rear stock that says AW 154 .. It's possibly the nicest one i have seen 0 rust or pitting and the bore is exc also . Action is tight and crisp its also all matching serial numbers 1316 , on the mag , stock , bolt .

The markings are paint applied over a stencil not stamps. Without knowing where that rifle last served, the marks could be either rack or unit designations.

I had one similar but in white, the colour might indicate something like a down grade due to wear but that's an unknown as Bearhunter has said above

Does yours have this type of stampings?

I have one of Charles R. Stratton's books and table F-8 shows the serial number indicates it was made at the BSA-Shirley factory in the second half of 1945... one of 81,300 made there.

The stencil markings are usually regimental rack numbers.
