Looking for info on my first build

308 bolt face could be used with another caliber with changing just the barrel?
6.5X47L uses the same bolt face as the 308win. It will also match the 260 rem velocities with less powder. The brass is available from Lapua. Way better ballistics than 308win. Check it out.

6.5x47 brass is crazy expensive, I almost had a heart attack when I bought a couple boxes last week. Definitely not an easy choice when on a budget.

So I spoke with Dennis Sorensen and figured while I'm waiting on parts and saving for others I'd get a little work on my 308 done to build some customer relationship with Dennis.

First thing I have to mention is how reasonable his pricing is, was expecting it to be higher. So my 308 is going for a visit to get the action trued, bolt handle threaded and barrel threaded for a muzzle brake. Dennis prefers to have the muzzle brake so he can threaded the barrel for that specific brake, so here's my next question.

Can someone recommend a good brake that isn't huge and performs well?

So now come the next decision, choosing a barrel. What barrel would you experienced LR shooters recommend in the $500 range? Shilen, Krieger, McGowen, Hart etc etc

Is there a general rule for length for shooting 600-1000yrds?
Is there really any benefit to the 5R rifling?

All the better brands WORK... finding one is likely a bigger part of your decision then what it is.

For general plinking, anything from 26" to 30" work. All you are doing is balancing muzzle velocity with ease of tuning. I have taken 20" rifles and sent bullets to 1450yds. It just needed more elevation.

For competition, max out on the rules, ballistics even if it is more work or costs more.

See Krieger site on their thoughts on 5R rifling.

Ask Shilen about their canted or ratchet rifling.

We are always happy to accomodate what the consumer wants..... sometimes the best answer is "Sure".

If the results stand, a new NRA SR BR rail gun group and agg record was set with a 6 groove standard lands Shilen

I'm finally starting to get some of the parts together. I now have another Remington 700 sps tac in 308 for a donor, the MDT tac 21 chassis and I have a spare bushnell 10x40 3200 tac I can use as a temp scope.

Man this is a slow process but its right on schedule. Next will be a Timney Calvin elite trigger for Jerry, then barrel, rings, milspec buff tube, magpul PRS and a M pod
