I've been trying to figure out this rifle my friend has, but unfortunately I can't nail down how to find the information I'm looking for with google searches. I'm trying to determine the Model and Year of Manufacture, and a price range.

The markings on the receiver and barrel are the "FN" stamp, and "Made in Belgium" on the side of the receiver, with the barrel only showing "338 Mag" with various small proof marks near where it connects to the receiver. The serial is 4 digits, starting with K6xx.

It has a cheap black synthetic stock and a tasco scope.

Thanks in advance. If there's a marking I missed (I couldn't take the rifle apart other than remove the bolt) Let me know and I'll try to see if he will let me tear it down.

Lots of war time rifles were cobbled together and sold as cheap sporting rifles, which were then later "improved" with cheap scopes and plastic furniture. The price range depending on condition could be anywhere from worthless up to $450. Does the serial number on the bolt match the serial number on the receiver? The year of manufacture depends what you mean by manufacture. The action was most likely a product of the 1940s, possibly the 1950s, although FN produced high quality 98 Mauser actions from the early years of the 20th Century, possibly as early as 1901. Probably the bolt was opened up and the barrel manufactured and installed between the '60s and '80s, and the stock, possibly a Ramline, was purchased sometime in the last 25 years or so.

Is the barrel a one constant conture or stepped ? If stepped it may be a Browning Safari in a Ramline stock?

Look on the left hand side of the receiver for a stripper clip cut out. This will tell you if its a surplus or early production FN or later production civilian model. Google Frank de Haas Bolt Action Rifles pdf and use the pdf download on the archive dot org website. He has a comprehensive description of FN production and changes through the early years.
