Hi there I don't own a rifle yet but I am looking to get I to the sport as I have done some range shooting and really enjoyed it. When I was 16 I shot an old Springfield rifle which looked to me to be ww2 era with it's bolt action and an eight round clip. That one had some kick! Also recently I went shooting with a friend and he has a .270 rifle he uses for deer hunting. I have been poking around and am struggling with my lack of knowledge as to what is a good way for me to go. I would like a rifle in the 3-600 dollar realm. I would like a bit of power. I will be doing mostly range stuff. But I would like to be able to do other things should I feel the need. I am a tinkerer and mechanic so maintenance isn't a concern and actually would be a plus. What I am worried about is on going costs eg: ammo, and replacement parts. But I'm open to any and all suggestions. Would like to know about necessary accessories to buy too. Thank you so much for any input.

If you're primarily target shooting, get a Ruger 10/22 (or buy Canadian and get a Dlask Arms DAR22) and enjoy cheap ammo (e.g. $20 for 500) and myriad aftermarket parts for customizing it however you want. You'll save enough in your first 1000 shots that you'll have money to buy a centre fire rifle.

10-22 is a good place to start but if you like the idea of a big bore gun for cheap, you can't beat the SKS. Lots of accesories, cheap ammo and it can be used for hunting big game if the mood strikes you.

Poke around and decide what type of gun you like and think about what you plan to use it for, hunting? Close range? Long range? Bolt, lever, pump, semi?
