Looking for land owners permission to hunt

Hello everyone, I have a little beef! It seems harder and harder to find places to hunt game now a days.

I have been hunting for 5 years, and many times I have asked land owners in Manitoba for permission and they refuse. I understand that some hunters are irresponsible, but it seems that more land owners are willing to let others(Americans) hunt for a price ,then let me and my children and other Canadians enjoy hunting on their land. Hey, what happened to putting our fellow Canadians hunters and their children first? Don't get me wrong, I love our American neighbors! I just want to give my Children some great memory's of hunting with Dad.

Well, I suppose there are farmers that put their children first, before, way before yours. That might be an answer.
 
i know what you mean. the same thing's been happening in my area for years.i own a little bit of land(75 acres), and that's why i bought it. to hunt on . i'm afraid there's a day , in the not to distant future, where you'll have to know somebody awfully damn well,own your own property, ante up for renting a place to hunt or drive a distance to crown land. the farmer or landowner has the choice and supply and demand to let paying customers on his land. you can't really blame them for renting their land for hunting, if they choose to do so.

How about putting our Canadian Auto workers and their children first?

I see from your name that you drive a Japanese-built vehicle. Does that make you a bad Canadian? Probably not and neither is the farmer if he puts the financial well-being of his farm and family before some misguided national loyalty.

Or more likely the farmers just don't appreciate the droves of hunters who beat a path to their door during hunting season which also BTW is the busiest part of the year on a typical farm.
 
this seems a prevailing trend

someone somewhere gave a good advise, offer to help/lend a hand around the place, see what the guy may apriciate in return for leting you onto his property, I cant wait to see my little boy sweat around the farm like his old man did when I was his age:D

Pay to play is the trend and it is not going to stop anytime soon. You had better have something to offer a landowner or your not going to get access.
The property that I own and manage costs me a bundle and I had to cut the deadbeat hunters out of the mix a ways back. The friends I hunt with now all know the score, they ante up with either money or material or labor... no free rides.
Is this a selfish attitude??? You betcha but my family and pocketbook comes first.
 
There are a lot of wildlife management areas within driving distance of Winnipeg. Unless you only want to drive 10 minutes.

Stop at the RM's office and pick up a land owner's map of the area you want to hunt in. They show WMA, crown land, and current owners/leasers of all the farm land in the area. Maybe you will recognize a name or two.;)

i paid $25,000.00 in 2001. that's all bush with a beaver pond. now it would be $30,000.00??? i don't keep up on real estate prices.i guess real estate is really worth whatever some horses a$$ will pay you for it.
 
Do you have a trade that might come in handy for the farmer, like a carpenter, roofer, welder, etc.? If not offer to help him out during calving or branding, fixing fences. Most hunters only show their faces at the most inopportune time to ask permission. The farmers that I know are not trying to make a buck from granting access, they just get tired of the BS they have to deal with. I know first hand as I ride a grazing lease, people don't know what closing a gate means, or leaving one open, or not putting out a fire before they hike out, or that it is irresponsible to cut a wire, etc.
 
My experience has been you gotta know a guy who knows a guy with land. That's how I came into an awsome waterfowl field. Now that person has passed my name along to another farmer who wants someone to hunt his property.

In all honesty though, there is crown land that sees very little to no pressure for all game in the Sandilands. The trick is finding it or knowing someone who finds it by tromping through the bush!!!;)
 
More and more rural property within an hour's drive of nearly any city is being bought up by people moving out of the city to retire. Most of 'em have never seen a real firearm and don't want to. Nor do they want people they don't know on their land for hunting or anything else.
The cost of land is entirely dependant on where it is. The closer it is to TO, the more it will cost. Having a house on it and water frontage will increase the cost too.
 
You just might have to pick up a parcel of land for yourself.That is what me and my wife did picked up 160 acres relatively cheap also.It provides us a place to go camping in the spring,summer,fall,(we have a 20' trailer up there) as well as atving,and hunting in the fall.There is also 10 sq. miles of crown land for us to utilize within 7 miles from us.:)

Believe me it was something I never thought was possible in this lifetime.It was something I wrote down on a piece of paper "things I would buy if I won a lottery".Land,a BN quad,trailer or cottage.Looked for 7 years before the dream became a reality.Anyone can do it if you look hard enough and aren't up to your eyeballs in debt.I have seen other acreages for sale up there for between $95-130 an acre.Mostly bush and swamp excellent for hunting though.:)

As I recall, 7mm-08 and I are almost neighbors with regards to hunting land. I bought mine about 5 years ago, for the princely sum of $54.38 an acre.:)

Yes we are.Did you make it down here for deer season this last year,any luck?Man did you get your property cheap :eek:.Are you somewhere between Narcisse WMA and Clematis WMA(I have a LGD of Armstrong land ownership map).Did you see many hunters out your way?Quiet out our way a truck would drive a mile past our prop.to the dead end turn around and come back.I actually did see one guy walking:eek:.Alot of the property the realestate agents are selling now is outrageously priced Cheapest I have seen lately is 160 acres no road frontage just on the north end of shoal lake R.M. of St.Laurent think it was $20,900.00.
