I haven't had too much luck in finding some land to hunt, yet. I've checked with some of the farmers near where my folks grew up, but none of them want hunters on their land (not even to help with the odd coyote). So here goes:

Looking for:
Land/acreage in the Outaouais QC region, to hunt small game only. I'm a 31-yr-old new hunter with safety on my mind. I walk the land (so no ATVs) and don't hunt with a dog. I promise to close all gates, and be mindful of livestock and buildings. I'd like to stay within 2.5 hours of Ottawa and hunt on the Qc side.

Please contact me if you have something that loosely fits the bill.

Thanks

what the hell kind of farmers are those?

ones that have had bad experiences with letting hunters on their property before, or hunt themselves.

you'd be amazed how much premission you can get when you offer to help around the farm, throwing square bails or mucking stalls. I tell them I'll do anything to let me hunt there land, works most of the time.

Is there any good crown land in southern Ontario? I want to apply for the controlled hunt but haven't got a place to hunt. This will be my first hunt ever.

This ^^^^. Sweat equity goes a LONG way. ;)

I have found most people who want permission on my farm don't want to do any work. They want to hunt the stands I build and the food plots I put my blood and sweat into....but once you mention WORK they never come back....

The way I figure it is if you want to hunt a full week you owe me a weeks worth of work on the farm weather it be fixing stands, helping with the plot, fixing Tractors or just doing odd jobs. I don't run an outfitting business I do the work for myself and I'm not just going to share it with folks unless their respectful of that and offer a helping hand. If you want to hunt but don't want to contribute then you can find some where else to hunt or go buy your own land and do all the work your self!.

Rant off....lol

It's a good point. My problem is that the conversations never got that far.... In the 4 instances where I approached the land owner, I was met with: "no hunting/hunters on my land".

I have seasonal allergies, and hay-fever is NOT one of them. I like hay bailing, wood splitting (with an axe!), feeding animals, etc... I must admit though, I'm not mechanically inclined. If offered to trade a few days work for a few days hunting, I'd gladly roll up my sleeves and get in there.

Try asking farmers if they need any help around the farm first maybe even keep hunting out of the conversation see if they need a hand for a modest wage. Get to know the farmer and let him get to know you then ask him if you could hunt the land. Or offer your services for free and just say I'm not looking to get paid I was hoping we could get to know each other before I asked permission to hunt your land.

Good luck!

Scouting for a place to hunt, should be a year long activity, if you don't have a spot already.

With the amount of people looking for permission, you have to be able to do something for the farmer/landowner, that gives you the competitive edge.

Just showing up on his doorstep, and asking, usually won't cut it.

In the spring, look for a farmer picking stones in a plowed field...offer to help. Summer time...bailing hay. Winter...cutting next years firewood.

Tell them what you can do. Do you know how to: drive a tractor/ herd cattle/ use a chainsaw/ weld/ etc. ?

Trust is everything...if you are a man of your word, show up when you said you would, and are ready to work HARD (sometimes) you will be rewarded.

If you do get permission...DO NOT bring anyone else with you, without asking first.
