hi im finally entering the blackpowder fray and got myself a trade musket in .54 cal and a Parker hale p61 Enfield musketoon. The p61 was a deal I couldn’t say no to but I knew I would have trouble sourcing a mold so here I am! I can’t find a .575 Minnie mold at this point in time so I’m wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction?

I’ve seen a ton of advice on here for pouring molds scrolling thru forum posts from days gone by. I’m wondering if anyone has any good bare bones beginner setups for making minies they can recommend along with some basic tips in techniques.

Any and all advice is appreciated thanks for your time!

I've had several P-H musketoons over the years and they tend to have a snug bore.
Lee used to make Minie moulds in .575 and .577.
You would want the .575.
You might have to get a custom sizing did made up, it your balls are too snug.
It would be a simple job for anyone with a large to open up an unwanted die.

Plenty of .575" Lee molds available on e-bay. Also possible to find a used iron mold—they cast better than the aluminum ones. These are, of course, all "grease groove" bullet types. If you want a historically accurate (for British use) smooth-sided minie you may have to special order a mold. If you end up with one of the Lee molds they're pretty straightforward but getting perfect bullets (with pure lead) from them is not. Abit of practice is needed to find the sweetspot.

From my experience with the Parker Hale Musketoon I found the RCBS .577 minie worked the best the skirt is a little thicker than the Lyman or Lee and the load was no more than 56 gr 2FG

RCBS 58-500-M is the mould #

While it's been more than several years since I cast Minies for the Musketoon, I found that it you carefully filed the tip of the base plug down a little bit on the Lee mould, you would get a higher percentage of properly filled out bases.
I read about it on the cast book it forum.

This is the minie bullet mould sold by Parker Hale specifically made for their musketoon. They are considered the holy grail of the minie moulds for the PH enfield riflesIMG_0068.jpeg
