Ok so, after research and shooting both the savage bolt .22 mark 2, and the marlin bolt 22 with it's protrigger... both seem almost exactly the same....However....

Im looking for a good .22 bolt with a good market for extra magazines... the marlin seems like great value, but to hard to find magazines....

any suggestions as to which route to take, or if theres any other options for a bolt .22?

I already own a ruger 10/22, This won't be my first firearm, i'v owned and shot many.. Im just looking for a very, very accurate bolt .22 to have fun with.. maybe experiment shooting with up to 500m

Perhaps a bit more of an indication of just WHAT your intentions are for the use of the rifle. Target and range shooting with varminting included is one thing and a heavier barrel tends to be a bit better for this purpose. Informal plinking and shooting are activities that a lighter barrel can suffice.

Both the Marlin and the Savage are good rifles. I have shot heavy barreled Savage Mark II rifles for years, but then I am in a Gopher heaven, and a heavier barreled rifle is more suitable for my shooting. That being said, I also have several lighter barreled rifles that I use, the latest being a Zastava Z5 which has an adjustable trigger, reasonable weight for carrying in the field, and insane accuracy. As noted, the CZ rifles are very good.

As far as extra magazines go, Savage magazines are fairly common and can be found at most good Gun shops. Marlin magazines should be able to be ordered by the same good Gun Shop if not in stock. For most purposes, about three extra magazines should do nicely.

Both the Savage and the Marlin are not that expensive. After you have used the one you choose for a while, and gain more experience, then you can upgrade to a more expensive rifle. Who knows, you may not have the passion for shooting that a lot of us have and find other interests. (Every once in a while a slinky Blonde comes along, and they are VERY expensive to maintain.):)

Since you liked the Marlin I would suggest you consider a tube feed model. I love my Marlin 981T because I can load it up with any .22lr (except Magnums of course) and not worry about buying/carrying extra mags. IIRC....the tube holds 17rnds of .22lr and no unsightly mag sticking out like a Donky's (you know)
It's not the most exotic looking or best finished rifle out there but its shoots straight and cost little $$.

You can get large mags for the marlin also. I have found the tube mag easier on the fingers though. If you can swing it, check out the CZ, they area great. In the end, handle them all, and chose the one that is the most comfortable. If you are planning to scope it, remember that your line of sight will be a bit higher too. I would recommend open sights for a little while first, maybe a metal reactive target if allowed where you plan on shooting.

I have a ruger m77 22 and I love it very accurate for target shooting and very deadly on grouse. Don't know what u r gonna use it for but ruger is a great choice in my opinion good luck with your search

Greetings

Note that if you are talking about the marlin xt series ,,the mags for the semi auto 795 work in it as well and are abundant
also has a 10 round instead of the marlins factory 7 rounds a bonus i think
This was my first and shoot it more than anything else

cheers

I just went through the same thought process and picked up a savage mark II SV. Can't say enough good things about it! Mags are easy to find and only $25 per for either 5 or 10 round. I put a Simmons scope and cheap bipod on it and can't believe the groups I get with bulk ammo. When I had it at the range I met someone who just picked up a CZ and he seemed to have some buyers remorse when I told him I bought it for $230+tax.

Like most things you'll have to go hold a few to see what you like. Personally I don't like standard .22 barrels like on my 10/22 because it feels like an airrifle in my hands. I ended up choosing the MK II SV because the heavy barrel has a more substantial feel to it. At the end of the day I don't think you can go wrong with any rifles that has been suggested in this thread.

This comes up so often, there should be a sticky poll in here "what should be my first .22 bolt"...

CZ452 or 455 gets my vote. Love my 452, laser accurate, great trigger out of the box, beautiful wood and fit and finish are an incredible value for the $$.

CZ 452. If you're going to run the iron sights, get it with the full stock. How could you not?

Ok, Let me be more specific...

I'v shot tikka's, benelli's, rugers, glocks, 870's, 500's.. 9130s, sks's....marlins.. savages.... This isnt my first firearm. i'v shot quite a few in my time =)

This purchase MUST have a bullbarrel or heavy barrel.., a light trigger pull(preferably a adjustable trigger like the accutrigger or protrigger by marlin), must be bolt action, and must have availability for mags.. maybe a option to upgrade the stock afterwards...

As i already own a ruger 1022, Iv thought about getting a new volquartsen barrel, a kidds trigger... the whole shabang.. but in the end, i figured i should keep it stock, and just buy a new bolt rifle....

the purpose for this bolt rifle: for plinking, hunting, and distance shooting... I want to be getting into something i can take out to maybe... 500 yards, accuratly... don't tell me its impossible, becuase it is.. and i use my 1022 bonestock out to 300, but the grouping is not what i'd like it to be....i need a better barrel, better trigger, and a bolt action for the extra umph behind the bang.

You are describing a Ruger M77/22 Varmint... and you get the wonderful flush mount rotary mags with it and with as many as you want, and the mags are available everywhere... and the option to jack 25 rounders in there if you choose to.

25 Rounders? Pshaw. I'm tempted to get the M77/22 just for the giggles of jamming in a GSG 110 round drum into a bolt action.

CZ 453 Varmint. No need to upgrade the trigger on this one. $630 at del selins (they advertise on the EE)

I shoot 4" groups at 200 yards with mine and Eley ammo.

I bought mine for long range shooting .22 just like you!

It has a single set trigger. So from
Factory it has a 5lb pull, but if you click it forward the trigger then has less than a 1lb pull. Adjustable safely below 8oz.

Smooooooooth action. Accepts 452 mags. Walnut stock. Free floated heavy barrel. Dovetail machined into top of receiver.
