looking for my first bolt .22.. need ur opinions

Under the gun's 1/2" challenge seems to show that most savages don't compete with the higher end stuff for accuracy. (There is a couple capable of it)

You claimed it held just as good of accuracy as an anschutz or a custom build. That's what I was debating. Glad you've changed your tune. :D

I think they are an incredible value, and a great introduction rifle. I just don't think they're the best choice for 500 yard shooting... Which is what the OP is looking for.

The post was about asking opinions, and I disclosed in the beginning that I didn't own a savage rifle. Since then others have also chimed in that they're not the best choice for precision shooting.

Guess you were out voted.

Got any good pics of savage rifles you've done up? Or groups? Just curious. Most guys don't post those things.

Edit: just saw some of your savages in another thread. Damn those are nice!
Most Boyd's stocks won't work for a lefty shooter like me :(

I can't be "out voted" of my informed opinion and personal experience... and I haven't changed my tune...

I have a $300 MKII LR that out shoots two of my three Annies and 14 of my fifteen CZ's...

Guess what my most accurate rifle is, rimfire OR centerfire @ 100 meters... a Savage MKII in .17 HM2...

What I said is, that many Savage rifles can hold their own in the accuracy department compared to guns costing much more... you certainly won't get the fit and finish of a CZ or the precision of an Annie or the robust build of a Ruger... but you can expect excellent accuracy most of the time... lemons can and do happen at every price point... the biggest rimfire lemon I ever had was a CZ 452 Varmint in HMR... fortunately I found a replacement last night... gotta love the EE.

I have said enough on this thread and will offer up the last word to whomever... I won't be back.
 
I would ask you both one question... this is obviously a Rookie shooter..... and this may be his first and last 22.... which is your choice?....

Hoyt.... I respect your opinion and have seen what you do with rough but accurate shooters.... but you need to realize that you are outside the norm.... I dont think op wants to dump 2k plus into a 22
 
save your money and forget all these new riffles mentioned in all these threads and FIND yourself an old Mossberg 144 LSB,,,,and you'll out shoot pretty much all these new riffles,,,they are a bit hard to find,,but they are out there,,i found 2 for $175.00 each,,,and more accurate than pretty much all the new fancy jobs out there now,,

Along those lines...

As much as I love my CZ 452, I have to admit that my uncle's 60 year old Remington Matchmaster 513T can out-shoot it. They're getting a bit long in the tooth, and harder to find, but they're out there. And there are still some competing, and winning, in competitions south of the border.

You might be able to even find a good deal on one, because a lot of the time it's currently in the hands of a second generation owner, for whom it's just "Dad's heavy old .22". Even on the high end of cost, you should be able to get one for under $500

They were initially developed for introductory sniper training for the US military during WWII to teach the new guys all the fundamentals without costing a mint in full calibre ammo. To this day, one of the best match target .22 rifles ever made.

I fully plan on pissing of my cousin by scooping the 513 out from under him. Which is only fair, we've been scooping stuff out from under each other for 40 years, and so long as we stick to the etiquette of the scoop, it's all good.
