I haven't shot a deer before, so I am very excited for the season to start Nov10. I bought a new rifle and a trailcam and have put up 2 stands near my home. I have a few doe pics and a couple pics of bucks. I think I am going to go after the one pictured below. What do you guys think, is he a shooter?

If I may offer some advice. You don't have to been an antler hunter right off the bat. I would personally be satisfied with filling my tag for the season rather than getting a certain animal. If you are new to hunting, you have alot to learn about hunting and I would suggest that either a doe or buck presents themselves, don't hesitate. One thing you might discover is that waiting for a specific buck....may not work as he might not ever so up...I have been down that road before. Good luck and I hope you fill your tag. Remember...close is better....

Morpheus, I am not sure he will even live till Monday anyways, ML season is in full swing and he probably covers a lot of territory, someone else may have taken him already. However, just because it is my first time out doesn't mean I haven't done my homework. I don't plan to shoot the first animal I see just to fill my tag. I have more than 50 hours stalking this fall which is pretty good considering I work 8-6 and every other Saturday.

I would have no trouble getting a doe, they are plentiful around here, so if by the end of the season I haven't taken a buck, I will settle for a doe. I should probably not be so vein, but what can I say, I really want to get a buck. I just hope I can be patient enough to wait for him, or at least another mature animal.

If you want some meat shoot the one with spots. If you want to be a Buck hunter and shoot a big old Buck, learn to like summer sausage.I would shoot the first thing that walked close enough.

You've never shot a deer before and your already looking for that trophy buck!?!?!?!

anyone that hasnt already shot a ton of deer and is passing up nice 8 pointers like in that pic is crazy IMO.

it's great to have want to shoot a trophy but if you are waiting til the end of the season to fill your tag just remember s**t happens and weather & circumstances can screw up lots of well intentioned plans.

I pondered the thought heavily before deer season...do I want to hold out for hopefully a big buck, and bragging rights, or put some meat in the freezer, with the conclusion of a successful hunt.

I still didn't have my answer when I left that morning. I still didn't know until I got a little buck running in not long before legal shooting time was over.

That's when I made my choice. It was my first deer hunt, and success.

Good luck!:)

Look close .. .he is a 5x5 ... and I won't pass him up if I get a chance, don't worry.

is your area in steinbach a 2 tag area? Don't have the regs in front of me right now.... if it is, buy 2 tags, and snag a doe if you can... leaves you the rest of the season to try for him. If it doesn't pan out, you will have learned a tremendous amount trying to get him.

Now, if he just shows up when you're there....... !! I also have a great buck on my trail cam and have been faithfully at my spot since last Saturday. No sign of him or any other buck yet. Lots of does, but so far only small ones. I have doe & buck tags this year and hope to get either one or both of them filled.
Best of luck, and since we've seen the before photo, I hope to see the after photo soon!!

Only you can decide if he's a shooter or not and it really doesn't matter what anyone else on here thinks. He's not a big scoring deer by any means and I do know lots of hunters that would pass on him but I also know lots of hunters that would shoot him in a heart beat. Neither is right nor wrong. It's important for you to take home what you want from a hunt and really don't worry about what anyone else thinks. The answer is pretty simple.....if you are content shooting him then by all means go a head.....

Good luck!

Sounds like you have a goal, and that 5x5 is the trophy. Don't let anyone deter you for making your goals, if you hold out for the big boy and the opportunity arises, take it. But if it doesn't, and at seasons end you didn't fill your tag don't feel bad, thats hunting. As long as your not shooting for the head on the wall, then your sounding like a veteran hunter already.
It's not about, how many or how big, it's about the experience and seeing stuff thats not in your everyday life. Enjoy

My first deer was about that size and his mount occupies pride of place in my house. I've shot a lot bigger since but none has meant more. It is the only deer I've ever had mounted.
