I'm looking to see what might be a good first time shotgun. I have my eyes on a Remington 870, but I'm sure there are lots of good ones put there. What are the suggested shot guns for a first time firearm owner?

I'm looking at doing some simple target shooting, possibly hunting down the road, and I know I prefer a pump action.

870 express was my 1st shotgun I say buy 1 if it feels good when u shoulder it. Whatever shotgun u decide on spend a little extra and get the short and long barrels with it, that was my one regret and it was much more expensive to buy the second barrel without the it packaged into the gun.

First thing is fit. If it doesn't fit you, no matter what you get its a waste of money. The 870 is a good shotgun to start with but it IS a budget gun. You mentioned that you may want to hunt down the road, so think about what you'll be hunting...target shooting and deer hunting don't really require more than a pump, but for waterfowl and upland hunting a semi could serve you better. Also, as the previous poster mentioned, having multiple barrels is a good option. The 870 express can have a rifled cantilever and a bird/sporting barrel with interchangeable chokes at a reasonable cost. I personally own a few pumps and semis and love them all for their intended purpose. It all depends on fit and budget...more times than not you get what you pay for.

870 is a great choice. Keep an eye out for used wingmasters. They are a better shotgun than the express. Try and get a barrel with chokes.
It help if you stated your budget. Take your time, hit up some local gun shows and watch the EE.
Also, what type of target shooting? Clays? What kind of hunting? Waterfowl? Deer? Really too little info to be much help.

Get something purpose built. Need a quick shouldering partridge gun or a goose gun that handles big heavy loads? Or a short higher capacity action shooting gun that you can throw in a barrel or drop without wincing? One will never be enough! My next will be the Mossberg 500 persuader. That'll be my 8th shotgun, each with their own best uses.

My first shotgun was an 870 express. It was a great gun! Keep in mind the finishes on them tend to rust if not properly maintained. If you're going to get into hunting with your shotgun I would strongly recommended looking at a Benelli nova/supernova.

can't go wrong with an 870, my personal preference for a first pump shotgun with be a mossberg 500. the slide release and safety switch are in more natural places for me. and the 500 is lighter, dual extractors, probably just as many aftermarket parts as an 870.

best thing to do with buying any new gun is check out youtube video reviews, get your hands on one in a store, or even better if you can test fire them.

I heard build quality on 870s aren't the best. I'd say go with a Mossberg 590A1.

He said he wants I for target shooting and possible hunting. The 590A1 (and I love mine) is not really the right gun for either of these purposes. It is a combat pump shotgun with ghost ring sight. You're not going to hunt birds with it or shoot skeet...

Can not go wrong with a mossberg 500 or if you wanna save a few
get a maverick 88 thats what i did still only shotgun i own came with ribbed 28
got the short barrel after and a pistol grip and just dress it up for what im doing

Consider one of the classics. Winchester Model 12 or an Ithaca 37. Both great hunters, both served in the war and both has slam fire capabilities.
