Hi all

I'm new to skeet but have taken a liking to it.

I'm looking for a side by side or over/under for my first skeet gun: price is a limiting factor for now, especially because its my first and I'll be learning on it.

Thanks

I'm not sure to be honest: I'm interested in buying a package....a case, cleaning kit, ammunition etc....but if I can't find one then just the shotgun

I've seen huge variances on price but I'd like to stay under $1k for everything.

If you join a club, many people will let you try their guns, and you will see which guns fit you. Make sure that you buy a gun that will stand up to many thousands of rounds, most lower priced guns won't handle that kind of usage.

Yes, if you are planning on doing a high volume of shooting, look for a used, quality gun. They are out there for under a grand. I just sold an excellent condition citori 20 gauge skeet gun for $900.00. So just keep an eye out for one.

An option seldom considered is to check out trade ex they offer some good quality sxs. Just read the description well and select one with more open chokes or have the chokes reamed out.

Personally I like tighter chokes for skeet and use a baikal f/m mostly.

Welcome to the madness!

If you look carefully you can find a good quality used o/u at your price point. Buy a gun with a reputation for longevity, not an inexpensive import. To most people this will be a used Browning or Beretta, but there are others as well. Don't be afraid of a gun with fixed chokes. It'll serve you well on the skeet field and be a bit cheaper to buy.

I know you mentioned a double barrel, but frankly don't count out a decent gas auto loader. The plusses are reduced initial purchase price and reduced recoil while shooting. Use the price difference to buy a few flats of target ammo and put some lead down the pipe at targets. If you decide to move to an O/U later you can sell the auto loader for pretty much what you bought it for.

One more suggested purchase is the book called "Mastering Skeet" by King Heiple. I bought a copy at Wholesale Sports last week for 50% off the $19.99 price. One of the best books I've seen on shooting skeet. For the cost of a round of targets and shells it could save a new shooter years of trying to figure out how to properly shoot the game

The book is en route from Amazon, thanks for the tip!

Still sorting through all the information, definitely interested in the semi: any specific suggestions?
