Looking for new pistol advise

I've looking to buy my first couple handguns. I've put almost a 1000 rounds through a Springfield XD 9mm at the range, and I absolutely love it. Sights, trigger, weight all feel right to me. The important part is, I end up with holes in paper where I want there to be holes. It's on the list for sure.

My problem is gun #2. I've shot a CZ85 and liked it. It's a strong contender.

I'm growing on the Sig P226 and P229. I liked the Beretta 92S as well.

I've tried a few Glocks, and I'm not interested. They've never felt right in my hand and I don't like the standard sights. Also tried the S&W M&P and found I was not a fan, mostly because only 9 rounds fit in the mag at the range. Is this normal?

I'm looking for some advise on other guns to try, based on what I like and don't like. Also, with what I like, is there anything I should watch out for in terms of spare parts availability or other known issues?

In regards to the M&P only holding 9 rounds......it will hold 10, it is just really tough to get that 10th round in. I use a speed loader, and it is still tough.
 
Nothing wrong with that sort of list. The only thing to consider is the availability of spare mags and holster for later on should you want to get into any of the handgun shooting sports. At least one of your 9's should be able to be set up with this stuff for later on.

I'd also suggest that you check out the 1911 guns in 9 if you want a companion to the XD that you sound like you're going to get. But in the end any of the all metal guns you mentioned would be a nice constrasting companion to the poly framed XD.
 
my vote goes for CZ SP-01 Shadow...just got it yesterday...wow...awesome gun...site sponsor CRAFM has a really good prices on them too
 
CZ75b, Shadow or Sig 226. If you are looking at a 45, I'd say to get a Sig 220 or 1911. Sig 226 is easily convertible to other calibers with the X-change kits.

About 11 years ago, I shot a H&K USP 9mm. Absolutely loved it, but that was probably borne more out of a love of Counterstrike than anything else. Now that I'm older and wiser, I'd love to try one again to see if it might make my list. Do you guys think it would stack up against my list? Are they worth the extra $?

Of the list that you have tried, they are all one of a kind in many aspect, there aren't one better than the others. Both Beretta 92FS/M9, Sig 226; CZ 75B, Shadow or 85 combat, they all have solid track record, as for the feeling of Glock or M&P, it is your problem not to take advantage of their wonderful design. HK USP also a highly respected firearm. Nothing wrong to buy them all and keep the one you like the most.

I went over to Phoenix today and tried a few guns out. These are my personal observations and YMMV. I shot first with my chosen Springfield to set a control. Groupings were what I expected, felt comfortable as always, I like the heavier trigger.

Next was the Shadow. You folks were right, I loved it. The trigger pull was like silk. The sights were incredible. Best of all, my groupings were tighter than the Springfield. I can't deny the results, this pistol is amazing.

The Sig, I liked shooting it. Groupings were as good as with the Springfield, but between the two, I'd rather save a few hundred bucks and buy the XD. There wasn't something so special about it that made me fall in love with it.

M&P and Glock 17: I'll review these two together. I tried to like them. I found the trigger pull to be less than smooth, and in the case of the M&P, gritty. I couldn't get comfortable with the grip angle. I guess we're just not meant to be.

So, I've decided on the Shadow and the XD. Thanks for the input, folks!

I've shot a USP in 9mm and .45. And you are right, they are VERY nice guns. But they are not nice enough to be worth the extra money that HK charges. At least not for my money. If I were to spend that much I'd rather spend it on a truly sweet 1911.
