Looking for New Rifle to Hunt Longer Range With

Hey Everyone,

I am a Left handed shooter who has owned a right hand Remington 700 XCR LRT 223 bolt action before trading it for a break open single shot Thompson Centre Encore with multiple barrels to try out a single shot. After having that for a year or so I sold it and bought a left hand bolt action Savage 116 FLHSS 300 win mag which I am now currently selling.

Basically my question to everyone here is what to do now lol? I am looking for a 308 or 30-06 and have been looking into a few options

1) Buying another LH bolt action as it is quite nice, but availability of good quality guns for a good price is hard to find. (used and even new)
2) Buying a right hand bolt action and crossing over the stock to reload. A big pain but there is a lot of guns for sale out there.

I really like the Tikka T3 Lite Stainless LH or RH model, Sako A7 75 or 85, Remington 700 LTR in RH as well as the SPS Tactical (as well as a few more of the 700 series). I like how there are lots of aftermarket stuff available for the 700s and tikka's as well.

I will be using the gun for Moose Hunting mainly and my shots can be anywhere from 50-600 yrds. I am looking for something that is less then 9lb with scope and bipod and that can shoot a good distance with accuracy as well.

Anyone have opinions on this?

i have a t3 lite in 300 win mag that fits the bill. highly recommend a limb saver as the butt pad is garbage. very accurate, light, good trigger, comes in left hand, affordable.
 
My Howa Lightning stainless in .300winmag is my favorite rifle....(I just love the Hogue stock) It is as smooth as a Tikka, as I've owned 2 Tikka's. I'd hold out for a lefty bolt if I was you, just for the ergonomics and muscle memory issue. Why handicap yourself to an awkward followup shot? I always try to quickly put a followup into any animal I shoot, as I like to be sure it dies quickly. I really love Browning rifles, and may give one of those X bolts a whirl. They always have quality products.
 
Yeah I love the Tikka's and I like my left hand bolt a lot more and it is great for following up after shooting an animal 300-400 yrds from prone or sitting position. I really want a 308 but there isn't many dealers in Canada with a 308 LH in stock. Preferably id like to find a used 308 in blued or stainless as I plan on dropping it into a McMillan edge stock that I can get my hands on. Dont see the point in investing into a new tikka to dump the stock right away but i may have too as there is no used tikka 308 in canada to my knowledge (hopefully someone can find me one lol)

20yds or less is definately a high percentage shot...at that range u could remove the iron sights and still get your game :)
 
If you dont know enough about long range rifles to know which ones are capable at that distance then you should be focusing on a good hunting rifle and not worrying about anything over 100 yards for moose imop..

Not really about which rifles are capable at long range but a matter of which rifles are good from 100-600 yrds as well as being lightweight to be used for hunting. I actually know a nice bit about long range shooting and rifles, but I am just seeking opinions on good lightweight longer distance shooters as well as what people think in regards to getting a LH or RH model and how they experienced using both. I used both LH and RH bolt actions and its not a dramatic difference but I havent went back to RH after having a LH action so Im curious if anyone has and if they regretted it or dealt with it

Yes I know there is no need to shoot moose at 600 yards, as the couple moose i shot were well within 200 yrds, but Id like to have a rifle that I can hunt with and carry around as well as being capable of making a longer shot (whether it be on moose or paper). Basically it comes down to not being able to afford having both a bush gun for hunting and a long range rifle as well.
