Well, lucky me gets to go to New Zealand here in March and I figure I should try and get at least one hunt in. I've been several times before...being married to a kiwi has it's perks!!! So I know my way around. I'll really only have one weekend that we can get away to hunt, should be around the 22nd of march. I'll be hunting with friends, but he has just started hunting himself, so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can. Of course he went on his first Tahr hunt here around Nov and got 2!!! lucky bugger. I'll be using his gun, as I can't drag mine all that way for a weekend hunt. Wondering mostly about regs with me being with a my mate and only hunting with one gun. Wondering if we should just bypass the paperwork and just shoot on his license...I'm not sure even how it works there, do they have "tags" like us or do they just buy a general license and shoot what they want? I'm not sure that mid March is good Tahr time...I think it's a little off for them, but the Red deer roar should be starting at that time, so I guess the back up is to chase one of them around. Any tips on hunting Tahr would be great as well as tips on the regs from transplanted New Zealanders would get you many thanks...Pitched. And yes, I will be packing a flyrod and hunting giant browns when the time allows. If you ever get the chance to fish there it must be done. 7-10lb browns in 6 inches of water taking drys!!! It's worth every penny.

I hunted tahr in NZ. They only exist on the south island. Many people use a helicopter to get into the southern alps and then hunt. Mind you in NZ there are no licenses or tags and very few game laws, you can shoot from the helicopter if you want to, all perfectly legal. We used an outfitter and he had access to some private land, a fellow owned 3 mountains, they have been passed down in his family for generations. Anyway we did it all the hard way on foot and it was a spectacular hunt!
june is much better for tahr to be fully maned out.
