Looking for non-restricted semi-auto center fire rifle suitable for deer hunting

Given that the unholy coalition is bent on banning semi-autos and the only semi-autos I have are .22LR which might get special wording I'm looking for a semi-auto in something like a .308 that's non-restricted, I'd like to get something suitable for short range deer hunting too just in case they don't get banned or restricted.

Is the M14 / Springfield Armory M1A non-restricted?

What are my other options?

Would the CZ 585 (long barrel) be any good for deer under 250 yards (no long range hunting for me I'm not a very good shot)?

Go for the Norinco M-14. From what I've heard, they are just as good as the Springfield Armory ones, and cost about a quarter of the price ($399). Check with Marstar to see if they still have them available, as this is the last shipment of these rifles ever. According to this thread, they've had some cancellations, so I'd check with them.

Don't hunt with something in a 7.62x39 class cartridge. It is pretty weak if you are outside of spear range IMO.

One option is an SVT-40! Practice with bulk ammo, then hunt with norma, or reload. An M-14 will work as well of course. I have successfully used both. The SVT definitely looks odder.

Svt-40

This is a World War 2 Soviet Red Army semi-auto surplus rifle in 7.62 X 54R caliber. I own one and really like it. It's long, looks a bit strange but is very accurate. You can see them - I think - at TradeEx Canada's website. Expect a price tag of between $429 and $459 plus shipping and taxes. I wouldn't hesitate to use one for hunting deer.

I don't know where that myth comes from. You could kill and elephant with 7.62x39 with a well placed shot so a deer will be that much easier. Sure, you have to be at relative close range, but IMO, that's the best kind of hunting; stalking and shooting from close up.

If a guy can kill a 185 lbs.wild hog with an air gun, I am sure you can kill a deer with a .30 cal. bullet.

I think the elephant statement is a little overboard, but yes, I have seen videos of poachers doing it. Sadly, they used multiple rounds. I also would not recommend that anyone hunt boar with an airgun.

Sure, there are cases where deer have been taken humanely with a 22. That said, I would not recommend that anyone do it.

Go 308 class or larger. Both the SVT-40, and the m14 fit into this.

If you'd hunt deer with a 30-30 than a 7.62x39mm with proper hunting loads will do it better. Not just an opinion, fact... Going for bigger game might be pushing it, but what do I know... FN-49 is a nice rifle but an ockward carry with the fixed box magazine. The Garand, albeit a little heavy for a long carry for pansies :p with a modified 5 shot pinger would be my choice. Their as accurate as a lot of hunting bolt rifles, solid as a rock with 150 gr. hunting cartridges, & if you decide you don't like it, you could more than likely get out of it what you paid or better... Provided you don't get hosed when you initially buy one.

Mini-30 in 7.62x39, believe these can be had in 6.8SPC now as well. Much lighter and more compact than most of the other options given so far.

I have killed more whitetails with 7.62x39 than I can remember, a few a year using the Ak's. I have never had to track them more than 50 yards and most drop where they are shot. This year was a little sparse for deer in our area but winchester soft points slung out of a Romanian Ak took a couple large doe. But then again the biggest trophy buck I killed was with a Carbon-15 and Hornady TAP rounds.
It just amounts to shot placement.
Sorry for the rant, my 2 cents
