Hello,

I am looking to purchase a non restricted semi-auto rifle that I can use both at the range but also for hunting which I plan to do eventually. I only want to spend around 1K so right now it looks like it will be a AR-180 B2. What other semi auto rifles around this price range can be purchased in Canada? Also I was looking at the Remmington 7615 which I really like but I was turned off by the fact that it is pump action (this means I would have to pump after every shot right?)

look for a norc m14....new around 400$ depending on where you get it (if available, they move fast) They are Semi-auto in 7.62nato/.308. it would be a more versatile hunting rifle for you also.

-if interested the battlerifle section of CGN has a wealth of info on them.

Norinco M14 is a good bet for under 1K

Might want to check the Battle Rifles section. But the best Non-Restricted Black Rifle would be a Sig or H&K both in 5.56 and both over 2K :(

The Browning BAR, if you find a good used example, can be a very good shooter, and is availble in many calibres, including some magnums.

These are a world away from the 'Rinco M14 (which I own and love); but they do reperesnt another option.

If you're using the rifle for hunting, I'd take a closer look at the M14 and the CZ858. Most people would argue that the .223 round is a bit small for large game.

agreed. M305/M14 has longer range over CZ858.

Usiing A $1k limit, assuming it includes a scope, , to be used for hunting

#1 would be the M305. aq bit heavier than #2, below

# 2 would be a good used Browning semi or Remington 7400 series

get a quality scope - a good guideline is about the same as what you paid for the rifle

#3 would be an SKS-while fun & cheap to buy & run. not normally as accurate as the above two in stock form

caliber - 270 -.308 - 30:06 power level

depending on where you are the .223 is illegal to hunt large game (deer etc) all it's really legal for is gophers and cyotes. a semi .308 will do the trick on just about everything out here (alberta) plus it still has some nice whollup out at distance.
just my 2 cents
good luck... let us know what you go with..

thanks for all the posts

I ended up getting a SKS for around 179$ from Ellwood Epps. Which shoots 7.62x39 (same as AK-47) I also ordered a druganov type stock. Unfortunately I cant seem to find any milsurp ammo for this. All the places I contacted say they will be receiving some near mid July. The stores in Canada that sell this type ammo sell the Sellier & Bellot brand from South Africa and I suspect they are all arriving on the same ship from Africa! In the meantime I'm gonna pick up a Remmington 597 which shoots .22 LR. My buddy Robstar picked one up and it was a lot lighter than the SKS :) seem like a great introductory rifle and a good price at 225$ brand new!

Look, the .223 is just a little light for many hunting applications. If you want to go heavier and still have a black-type rifle, you're in M305 territory.
