I have a few kimber and sig 1911s and they all have been great guns. Shoot well, no failures, no issues. So Im looking at buying another 1911.... my top choices are.... Dan Wesson Elite Titan 10mm ($4000 US), Ed Brown Krypteia Edition ($3200 US), Wilson Combat X-Tac (About $2800) Im open to other suggestions, but im leaning towards the Dan Wesson... sounds like its a one off hand made gun. Other honorable mentions Nighthawk custom chris costa edition.

all will be good. be aware the dan wesson isnt a standard 1911, its a double stack caspian frame. same operation but different, more expensive, harder to find mags, its also a wider grip to accommodate those mags

If I could only have one pistol for the rest of my life, it would be a Wilson. Fit and finish is absolutely incredible. Nothing wrong with the other options, all great guns. From what I've heard and read on other 1911 forums I've heard of more issues with the Ed Browns (cosmetic flaws for the most part). When spending 3k+ on a pistol is should be flawless. My vote goes to the Wilson. Cheers!

I think thats why i like it alot... its a non tradititional 1911... well its not a 1911 is probably more accurate LOL Our local shop has one and its just a beastly looking pistol... reminds me of something robocop would have LOL. Plus i dont have any 10mm and id like to get a glock 20 at some point as well.

I would stay away from the Dan Wesson Titan; double stack 1911s tend not to work as well as single stack ones. In general, the further you depart from a basic specification of 5" barrel, single stack magazine, and .45 ACP, the more likely you are to encounter problems.

Les Baer, Ed Brown, and Wilson Combat all build good guns. Baers are the "value priced" option of semi-custom 1911, with emphasis on lots of hand fitting, but not as much on fancy finishes or cosmetic perfection. Wilsons are about as "no compromise" as it gets, short of a full-house custom. Ed Brown is somewhere in the middle.

I have a Baer Custom Carry and am very satisfied with it. They are very tight out of the box, but they wear in pretty quickly.

Les Baer.
I didn't care for the one I owned, but I think I'm in the minority there. I've owned two Nighthawks that I really like(d), but they were made a few years ago. I don't know how the current models stand up, except that they are eye-wateringly expensive now.

+1. Straying what the Lord and John Moses Browning intended is asking for trouble. ;)

Not sure I agree with that. STI and other double stack models are killing it. It's a revolved designed, not necessarily original 1911. That's why you get this belief they are no good.

Whatever suits your preference. Some appeal to me, others do not. Fit and finish is more guaranteed on those pistols.

If you are going to spend that kind of money, get a SVI made to your specs.
The wait time will be long but they make pretty much every part of the gun in house and fitment/attention to detail is incredible.

its definitely unique, I wish I could remember which smith makes them for dan wesson but it escapes my memory. I just wanted to make sure you know, I'd get my hands on a gun with the same frame before sinking that much money into the gun, and I love a standard 1911

Why not a full custom job from someone like Cameron Custom or Benny Hill or one of the other highly respected builders?

I have the NHC Costa

A fantastic 1911. Fit and finish is spot on.

I never looked into that, maybe i will research custom. Ive always wanted a Wilson Combat X Tac and that may be the one i go with, but damn that ed brown is a ###y beast.

If I could afford it Les B...for now STI is my choice and I'm happy with it.

For this kind of coin I'd be going full custom and again at this price point the import hassles are minor to get exactly what you want, with the parts you want. If you do decide I suggest you consider getting an extra trigger group and you could even get a couple of barrels fitted for drop in.....40 and 10mm maybe?
