Sorry, my only experience with a VX-6HD so far is with a 2-12x42 Illuminated B&C. (Mounted on my 338 Federal)
So far, I am very impressed with this scope! I have been a fan of the B&C for years, and am really liking the illuminated option as my eyes age.
I can resolve trees and stumps, and game (moose) back in the dark timber even at last light, where I cannot with with a VX-3 2.5-8x36 at the same time. (The two rifles and scopes that were with us at the time. I could make out the trees and stumps at the edge of the timber of the cut block, but not those back in the bush.)
While I am more used to the finger click adjustments under the caps of my VX-3 scopes, and don't care for the need of a small Allan key that can be easily lost to set the turret, I do appreciate the Zero Stop feature of the turret. But this is just me, and what I am most used to.
And I cannot comment much on the TMOA reticle as I have neither used or owned one. But as a hunter first who prefers the functionality and speed for which the B&C reticle allows me to use it in the field vs having too also dial for the range after re-ranging the target, I have not used the dial on my scope. But this just my preference.
For you, this option may be preferable. But that is for you to determine...I know a lot of shooters like this!
Where I can see the benefit of the TMOA reticle would be for someone who has zeroed a hunting rifle for say 300 yards for longer target practice (or hunting) and still wants the hashes for 100 and 200 yard distances to eliminate guessing the proper hold blow for game encountered at those closer distances.
The other instance would be on a long range rimfire rifle where there is significant drop at 200 and 300 yards for the 22LR, and want the marks for 50, 100 and 150 yards too....now this has me thinking of how to upgrade my scope for my Bergara B-14 22LR Carbon Trainer to go out to these further distances! LOL
As for a bigger magnification range, I have the VX-5HD 3-15x44 on my 6.5 PRC and am also really liking this scope. Again, really great glass, and I really like the extra magnification when shooting out as far as 500 yards (max at my local range). I also like that this scope isn't overly long or heavy for this magnification range.
(I do not care for 50mm or larger objective lenses as they can be more easily be bumped when in rifle scabbards on horses/atvs, in/out of truck, plane and/or boat, or during a drop, fall, or fall over, than scopes with smaller objectives as they are more similar in profile as the rifle. Again, hunter first, not a benchrest shooter)
I will say, that should I get a new rifle in 7mm PRC, I am considering the VX-6HD 3-18 x50 as it is now the only version still available with the illuminated B&C reticle. (Unless I can find another used one, or VX-5HD, with illuminated B&C reticle)
If you are impressed with the scope and it will fit your need for hunting, then buy it!
