Looking for optic for a sporterised .303 brit..

Hey all, first time posting in the forum section. I'm trying to locate a scope for my .303 brit. I've got a set of 1" weaver rings for the rifle but the issue is finding a scope that will fit and still clear the top of the barrel. The bell housing that sits over the action can flare a little but not alot. Any suggestions? Really looking for something that will hold a zero well and wont break the bank.

Is it drilled and tapped for bases or is there a rail mounted?

I have a Nikon prostaff 4x12x40 on my no4 sporter, Addley rail and leupold low PRW rings. The scope tube is long and the front bell clears the barrel contour fairly far, if I could get lower rings it would still clear.

Borrow a scope with a 40mm objective and see if it clears the barrel. If not, get slightly higher rings or a scope with a smaller objective. If you find the 40mm is OK, then there are lots of good used scopes on the EE. I personally like Vortex and/or newer Redfields. Both come with the "no-questions-asked" lifetime warranty. In the Vortex, I hear they've increased the quality of their Crossfire line (the cheapest), but I'd still go with a Diamondback. I have both brands on my rifles and put a lot of rounds downrange with nary a hiccup. Again, personal opinion, but I don't see any sense in putting $500. worth of optics on a $200. rifle. I suggest you look for older scopes secondhand. Some are of very good quality yet sell cheaply because they are out of fashion, (and there is a lot fashion-conciousness in shooting these days.) Look for Weaver, Redfield, when they were made in the U.S.A., Bushnell or Tasco when they were made in Japan, and Bausch&Lomb. These scopes will have optical quality and mechanical reliability that will do justice to that old sporter and they will have objective lenses in the range of 32-40mm so they will fit with the mounts and rings that were commonly used.
