Hello,

I've only used pistols for some time now and looking to get into bolt-action rifles.

Moneys tight so looking to get something under $300 but has some decent precision.

Any help is appreciated

Here is what I finally purchased:

Savage Mark II BTVS .22 LR (made in Canada) ... wood laminate thumb stock, 21 inch stainless steel barrel .. added a Bushnell 4X32mm scope (from Reliable $59)

I know this went a bit over the maximum price that I originally wanted to spend but I couldn't say no to what I paid for it.

While shopping around I found that this rifle goes for anywhere between $500 - $580, and it has to be book ordered. .. I got this for only $390 from Wanstalls.

Wanstalls had an awesome sale from November 16-20 on all their stock.

The brick of CCI Velocitors was a gift from my brother for my birthday(thanks bro! I hope the rifle likes the Velocitors

Looking forward to shooting it this Friday.

If your not stuck on bolts, a Ruger 10/22. Very reliable, tons of aftermarket stuff, big mags. About $265 new w/o tax.

If you plan on keeping it under $300 I'd forget about the 10/22. You will want to mod it just to get it shooting anywhere near as good as a savage or marlin bolt action, and for me at least the semi auto action is no compensation for lack of precision (I'm talking stock guns un-modified under $300).

yeah the 10/22 is a strong consideration as well

Then that's your gun. Nobody will argue against the 10/22 being a good gun for the money. Another .22 you might want to consider is a Cooey, you can find them used for $100.ish. I've got one of each and haven't had a problem with either.

peace..

ps. the Ruger has over 8000 rounds through it

For a bolt action, Savage would be my choice. Either a 93 or Mk2. If you find a couple extra dollars in the couch, get a 10/22 and buy a decent barrel.

my .02

Why would anyone recommend a 10/22 for someone looking for a precision(ish) rifle under $300?

OP, a Savage Mk.II is about as good as you will find in a new gun for your stated purpose. If you are willing to buy used, many older Mossbergs will shoot very well and be in your budget range.

savage mark 2 was/is my first gun and so far it's really great. i recommend it. i was looking at the mark 2 FV, but ended up with the TRR as it was right there in front of me for the cost of the TR.

I have to agree with the cooey. I sold mine but had an excellent condition 600 with dark stock a few years ago. The tube magazine allows you to place your hand where you like on the stock, it would also cycle shorts perfectly. You should be able to find one in similar condition and a buy a bushnel banner 4-12 for $300 all in. Accuracy was hole on hole and cloverleafs at 50 yrds rested.

A lot of people will knock norinco, but if you can find an em332...jump at it. Designed for olympic training you'll be hard pressed to find anything in that price range that even comes close. This is not your average norinco....and theyre nearly as rare as hen's teeth. Most people that were lucky enough to get one, are not willing to part with it. I spent months trying to track one down, and the wait was worth it. Having said that, there was one that actually came up on the ee in the last couple of days. If it's still there, i 'd suggest you give it a look. Most people have never heard of this rifle, but those who have them love em.

I should also mention that I also have a 10/22. it's a great little rifle and the semi auto makes it fun to shoot fast, but if you want a tack driver, the ruger can't touch the em332.

OP mentioned that the 10/22 could be a consideration

So he did. Then he really isn't looking for precision for under $300. They are a decent semi-auto, but precise isn't a word I would use to describe a stock 10/22. Spend another $400 over the initial purchase and it becomes a fairly precise shooting tool, but not stock.
