Looking for a smaller caliber rifle that is flat shooting. My 30 cals are emptying my pockets on ammo cost. The rifles only use will be plinking, and possibly the odd raccoon. I have a budget of around 600, I am not partial to any brands but want a decent rifle.

Ps I meant 223 not 233, stupid iphone

The 223 is more economical than the 22-250 in either factory or reloaded ammunition and is a bit easier on barrels but does not have the same performance level. My coyote gun is a plane vanilla Remington sps in 223 with a sporter barrel the shoots sub moa with relatively inexpensive Hornady spsx 50 gr bullets. You will get everybody's favorite and the Savage guys will show up shortly :)

X2.........Best gun and probably most accurate out of the box for the money in either cal.....My favorite is the 22-250 at full throttle.

i have a stevens 200 and i love it.
I also looked at a remington 700 sps, and i realy liked the look and feel of it the barrell is a little heavier and there is a ton of aftermarket stuff available for it im thinking of maybe getting one as well.
.223 is fun to shoot...

.223 is one caliber everyone should have at least one of. Savages are good rifles and if you reload you might want to look at a used 17 Fireball or one of the new 17 Hornets. 17 cal is a lot of fun.

I just picked up a TC pro Hunter in .223, not a 600.00 rifle but.... I sent it away and had it re-chambered to a .223AI..... and when sighting it in today I was grouping 1/2" at 100 while fire forming brass. I am indeed impressed.

Savage Tactical

Bought an older (non accutrigger) used Savage tactical for $425 a few months ago, put an 8X25 scope on it for groundhogs and worked on the trigger a bit (.040 vs .055 spring and some adjustment) and tried it out. Best group was .221 inches at 100 yards. I'm not the best shot on the block either. The heavy barrel and the inherent Savage accuracy and the 223 cartridge all worked very nicely together. Your mileage may vary.

Of the two cartridges, I'd pick the .223 over the .22-250. There is little if anything the .22-250 can do that can't be done as well with the .223, but conversely a fast twist .223 will do things the .22-250 cannot. With normal weight bullets the .22-250 potentially is easier to shoot farther, but this hasn't proven out for me, as I do as well with one as the other beyond 300 yards on small targets. With a fast twist barrel though, the .223 can take advantage of long bullets which are superior for long range shooting that the .22-250's 1:12 or 1:14 twist won't stabilize, giving the .223 an edge beyond 300 yards.

Boomer is right. The 55gr and under are pretty bad in any wind past 300.

I carry a mag of 55 VMax for 0-300 yds and a mag of 69gr for 400+

I have a .243 so the .223 was the natural choice over 22-250 for me.
