Recently came into possession of a WWI Steyr Mannlicher rifle (M1895). Bought Lee dies and it came with some reloading data. However, the data for my projectiles is sparse - only 3 Accurate Arms powders, one of which has been discontinued (AA3100). I emailed Hodgdon but no reply yet.

Nothing in my Lee 2nd, Lyman 48th, Speer 15th, Hornady 10th, Sierra 6th, Nosler 8th, Western 1st manuals. Nothing online at Speer, Hodgdon, Nosler, and Alliant. I have old copies of IMR and Accurate - nothing there.

I had a small amount to A4350 which I have now used up so once this last box is shot I am out of powders listed with the Lee dies.

I do have a subscription to "Load Data" online and did find some loads there. However, I would prefer a different published source of data (but I will be using Load Data if I can't find anything else).

My brass and projectiles are PPU (Prvi Partizan).

So, can anyone point me towards a manual that would have loads for the 8x56R cartridge for 208gr (or close enough) projectiles? I mainly have IMR, Winchester, and Hodgdon rifle powders but some Alliant and Accurate.

Thanks

I used 47 grains of Varget and 175 grain Seirra Pro Hunter in my 8x56 MS carbine.
Flattened two white tails with it before I stupidly sold it!
Great little cartridge....

Hodgdon helpdesk got back to me. While they couldn't offer me a load themselves, they said that "Cartridges of the World" has 198gr and 206gr projectile loads with IMR 3031. Ordered the book from Ebay this morning!

Note to others - the 8x56R is NOT the same cartridge as the 8x56 M-S. The 8x56R is rimmed and looks like the SVT-40 / Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R. The 8x56 M-S (Mannlicher-Schoenauer) is rimless and looks more like a 8mm Mauser or 30-06 (IMHO).

I believe (from Wikipedia) that the 8x56R is Austria-Hungary 1880s/1890s and the 8x56 M-S is from the Greek army early 1900s.

Above link broken as to not hot link.

Thanks! That's the same data that came with my Lee dies. Only the 3 Accurate powders listed for 200gr projectiles (and AA3100 no longer available).

True, but the difference in case capacity is what matters the most when working up loads from little or no info. - dan

I use the North American data for 8x57 Mauser. European data is much hotter. I haven’t had any problems with approaching maximum loads in my two carbines. Most of my shooting with them now is with cast bullets which much easier on the shoulder. Full power loads in 8x56R kick like a mule in the carbines. I keep thinking of pick up one of the long rifles but haven’t yet. I did recently pick an original carbine in 8x50R. The 8x50R uses the regular sized 8 mm bullets instead of 0.330 of the 8x56R. PPU labels their ammunition as 8x56R Mannlicher. The clips also fit both rounds and rifles. I have a good supply of Berdan primers so I have been using the original military cases along with boxer primed PPU cases.

The Lee Data is simply their popcorn fart 8mm Mauser data.

The 1938 milsurp stuff is just as powerful as milsurp 8x57.

It might help if we knew what you were doing with it. Just plinking or deer hunting.
I loaded 13 gr of Red Dot behind 205 gr cast for some fun. I didn't play with it enough to get any kind of accuracy but it went bang and didn't blow up the gun. To be fair, the old girl has a lot of miles on her (didn't expect much) and I was basically taking her out to get some sunshine. I might fiddle with it in the spring when it gets warmer out to see what she can do.

Thanks for the comment! No deer hunting. 100 yard paper targets, and possibly some upcoming "military matches" where we need to put 20 holes in a piece of paper (combo laying, kneeling, sitting, standing, at 100, 75, 50 and 25 yards). I currently don't cast bullets but I do have a container of Trail Boss as a last resort.

With the "Cartridges of the World" IMR data I'm probably good for the time being. I was hoping to use powder I had on hand (vs buying new powder). I have a few containers of Hodgdon, Alliant, and IMR powders. I figured some IMR powders should work safely.

Buy LEE's .338 win mag mold instead of the .329" they made for the 8x56R Hungarian. They have generous grooves. On Yesterday's Weapons Forum they used LEE .338 /220 gr cast bullet sized to .334 with 36gr of IMR 4350 and a compressed COW fill. Target was 50 yards 1708fps 6 o'clock hold at bottom of paper and 5 shots touching. They went to a MAX of 38gr IMR 4350 excellent accuracy.
