looking for scope advice for my 7stw

I firmly believe that the type of hunting you intend to do and the type of country you hunt in should determine the optics you put on your rifle, more so than the cartridge the rifle is chambered for. If the rifle is going to be used for long range game shooting, get the best value scope you can afford, and Leupold's LRT scopes are a good choice.

If you pockets are deep enough the S&B PM II series has some advantages over the Leupold, such as 130 CM's of adjustment in a single rotation of the elevation turret, a free of lash side focus that works without having to bracket back and forth until you've achieved your focus, and a 34 mm tube which allows for a greater range of magnification, 4X the lowest power rather than 3X typical for a 1" or 30 mm tube. Once you get used to using mildots, they provide greater flexibility for hold off or range estimation than any other reticle system IMHO, and the PM II is available with two ranging systems within their reticle; the mildot and a quick and dirty series of staggered lines that measure range out to 500 yards on a man height target, which works similarly to the curved line style of rangefinder used in Russian sniper scopes.

kinda like blonde or brunette, but I'd be looking at the Leupold VX 3L 3.5-10 x40 CDS, right now you can get two "free" custom dials. Be handy for a couple of rifles of different caliber.

I'm OK with the Blonde/Brunette thing but Leupold doesn't make a VX 3L 3.5-10 x 40 CDS.

You can have a VXL in 50 or 56 mm, or a VX3 in 40. The CDS is available in both.
