Looking for Scope advise.

Hi folks, looking for some sage advice.
I recently inherited a 1965 Winchester Model 100 in .308 (pics below) that looks like it’s never had any glass mounted on it. (Thanks - I did have the firing pin replaced as per recall)
It’s very unlikely that I’ll ever use it to for hunting, or perhaps at all, (mostly into handguns now – hunting is limited to the Isles of Loblaw’s…) but if I do need to reach for it, I‘d like to get the best out of it and my eyes aren’t what they used to be so;
I’m looking for advise as to an appropriate scope and rings that wouldn’t cost a fortune and also wouldn’t be stupid (like a mega tacti-cool Nightforce etc…)
Doesn’t have to be exactly age matching, don’t think I would need beyond 100 yards, don’t mind used and don’t mind having a Smithy install it properly.
It was my father in laws and his only request was that I hand it down to his grandson (my son) when I’m done with it, so I'd like to do it right.

Thanks in advance for your time and input!
EB

As far as a scope goes I would use an old straight 4x power or maybe 1-4x if you want it a bit more versatile. You could find a nice old Leupold on the EE or Bushnell if you want to keep it real inexpensive. The old Japanese Bushnells had pretty good glass in them but are inexpensive to pick up. I would use just a basic set of steel rings for it. Not sure about what bases would work on a Win 100 :confused: but I'm sure someone will share that info on here shortly.
Enjoy the rifle!

Alternatives to consider would be Weaver bases, Weaver rings and a Weaver K3 (straight tube) or K4 (bell objective). The K3-1 or K4-1, especially with the word "Microtrac" on the top turret would be about as good as ever made by them. A bit fussy to install the scope dead plumb in the mounts, but they work very well and would be totally age appropriate to the rifle. Winchester + Weaver went together for many years... Older Weaver bases had a curved bottom groove for the recoil slot - newer ones have a rectangular (square) slot. Older weaver rings had larger diameter thumb knobs and a round cross bolt; newer ones have much smaller thumb knobs and a square or rectangle body on the cross bolt. Older weaver rings had the cross bolt solidly mounted into the bottom part of the ring - newer ones sit in a slot, are separate parts in the package, and might be a bit of of a challenge to assemble. Always some discussion about which side is "correct" side for the thumb knob, but they work equally well with both of them on either side - pictures readily available on Internet of various "pro's" with the knobs on either side.

For the Weaver scopes - some of us are quite taken with the "post and cross hair" style reticle that Weaver (and others) made - heavy tapered post that come to a flat topped tip about 2 MOA above the cross hair - very quick and easy to use in bush / low light. The scopes were also available with plain fairly fine cross hairs, or with the heavy and fine wires that Leupold sold as the "Duplex" reticle - do not recall what Weaver called them. Perhaps easiest of all to use would be the Weaver with fine cross hairs and a 3MOA dot at the intersection. Carefully sight in at 100 yards so holes in target appear at very top edge of the dot, and from there to 250 yards or so, just put the dot on what you want to hit and fire.

If you are in Ottawa go see Rob and Jen at That Hunting Store in Richmond, just south of Kanata/Stittsville. They have a good selection of brands and are knowledgeable about appropriate optics and mounts. FYI, I have a Win 100 and 88, one was my F-I-L and the other my Dad's, both are great rifles, but not very suitable to scope mounting as the comb is very low and can make a solid cheek weld on the stock a challenge, they now belong to my boys, and the 88 now has a peep sight, and we will likely do the same thing with the 100. Good luck!

Aside from the Weavers mentioned above, a Bushnell ScopeChief would also be a nice addition. In particular, the 1.5 to 4.5 x would be a classy touch. These, and the Weavers can be had for ~ 100$ on the used market.
