I`m looking to buy another handgun. I already have a 9mm and don`t want to buy another in that caliber so I am torn between 40 and 45. I plan on reloading in the future so ammo costs are really no concern to me. Anybody have both and have a preference in calibers. I just shoot recreational at local range but would like to possibly get into IPSC. Any suggestions

40 S&W seems to be the flavor of the day although you can't knock the "old" 45 ACP Cartridge. Why don't you try and see if you could shoot one of your friend's pistol in both those calibers. Autos are sometimes finicky for the loads they can digest if you try and lower the recoil effect with reduced loads.
I've shot both and (for me) the 40 is a bit more manageable. If price is not a problem, buy the best you can afford, you never regret a good investment in a quality firearm..it keeps its resale value and sometimes it's worth more than when you bought it.

Either / Or....

I've got 9's, .40's & .45's.... love 'em all.

Well, 9mm is a bit of a pussy ctg but fun for plinking nevertheless... :p

All I have to say is you are falling behind, you need to suck it up and catch up with the rest of us, you need more handguns. Don't worry we are here to help and support you, we will not leave you behind.

why not get another 9mm? if you plan on reloading it makes even more sense; you load for one ctg. than decide what gun you want to shoot ;) and it's still cheaper than .40 or .45

but if you REALLY want another calibre I'd say get a .45acp, .40 is too similar to 9mm...

Go for the .45, it's easy to reload and forgiving. Plus it's feels very different to shoot then a 9mm. The bonus of the .40 is that used brass is easier to find, but beware the pressure in a .40 casing is supposed to quite a bit higher than a .45 and the case wears out faster.

Ah man, you always have something to offer...
This is a trick, right? The correct answer is...get BOTH!
If you own a 9MM handgun, you NEED to have a 45ACP.
If you have both, you NEED to have a 40S&W.
Once you have those, you NEED a REVOLVER in 38Sp./.357Mag!
Once you have those, you NEED a .22LR..?revolver..?semiauto..GET BOTH!
Once you have those, you NEED....you get the point!:D

I really like my 9mm but cannot justify buying another pistol in same cailber, in my opinion doing that would be like second guessing my first purchase and then one of them would be the loser eventually. So 45 or 40

First thing I thought and has already been said, is you would find the .40 close to your 9mm...and for that reason I think its slim I'll ever (should never say never!) get a 9mm myself. I prefer a nice variety, to date I have .40, .45 GAP and .44 mag. I've been looking at the norc's in ACP but a Colt .45 is also very appealing! See if you can arrange some test firing and then take it from there.

it's up to you man... I just find it very convenient to load for one caliber and then let my guns share it :) and the fact that it's cheaper than .40 and .45 doesn't hurt either ;)

Use your 9mm for IPSC, and get yourself a .45 for blasting at the range!! You will love it! I had a Colt Gold Cup National Match .45, and made the mistake of selling it! I WILL have another! You can use the .45 for IPSC, but the cost is much greater than the 9mm to shoot large amounts. Cheers!

If you do decide on .45, do not buy a polymer type of pistol. I recently fired a HK .45 lightweight polymer. The recoil was very nasty. I would go with a heavy framed gun for this caliber.

I don't think the .40 is anywhere close to the 9mm. The 9mil is closer to a .38.
