looking for second pistol 40S&W or 45 ACP?

Check this 45 out...

I was in several gun shops this week and had a chance to hold several different models and this is by far my favorite handgun...

The only reason I didn't buy it was because it doesn't come in a 10mm...

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...d=10001&productId=42906&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y

It's a S&W1911PD stainless steel slide, scandium frame, weights only 30 ounzes, black finish...

It was probably the nicest handgun that I have ever held.

for 45 been thinking about STI Spartan or CZ97B...for 40 I`m really undecided
I would recommend a Hi-power if you're looking for a .40S&W gun. TSE used to sell them for $699 brand new...not sure if they still do. I bought one a few months ago and it has since become my favorite gun.

personally I would (and did) go .40,reasons,it's cheaper to reload, brass is cheaper, easier to manage, will do anything a .45 will for competition (IPSC major), and as far as brass wearing out quicker,it's hard to say a lot of people just leave it laying on the ground so for every 100 you fire you can usually pick up 2-300.I have never had any problem reloading .40 and don't know of any one who has (if they pay attention and know what they are doing).I have had a few different .45's but ended up selling them all in favor of the .40,but yea the .45's big holes are nice. That's my .02 cents worth,if you are anywhere around Bridgewater p.m. me

Hi Hori ,from when we talked i understood you already made up your mind, and you wanted a n------ 1911 i showed you what i had.(not one of those) and that you were not totally sure you were going to get into ipsc.

My choice of gun is a STI Trojan,1911 .45 and i shoot single stack mags because that's what my hand likes the best.Speed is not a big factor with me i'm old gray and slow. also i can see the big holes in the targets.
On the other hand your young.

as for the best well that would be a personal thing, you can shoot a revolver in ipsc, and you'll probably win in that division not to many people shoot that anymore.but they still do.

Reloading to me is reloading ,you have to becareful and it's precision, every grain counts.

Now more than ever there are so many new guns.

I would stick to a good gun i do beleive that you get what you pay for.and in the log run it will cost you less. Also consider this if it breaks where can it be fixed,or can i get parts.

Iwas watching my brother shoot his Tanfoglio Limited Custom .40 cal and that gun has made him a better shooter.
What your doing on here is a great thing reasearch..Get different opinions,if you can go to a match get out and see ,there is allot to IPSC .

I hope that this helps.

If you do decide on .45, do not buy a polymer type of pistol. I recently fired a HK .45 lightweight polymer. The recoil was very nasty. I would go with a heavy framed gun for this caliber.

While I respect Griffoneur's opinion, I have to disagree. For me the polymer guns seem to soak up a bit of the recoil due to the flex in the plastic. Who knows, maybe it is just one of those personal perception things.

I've never fired the HK but have shot a SIG in .45 back to back with my G21. Like I say, I found the plastic to be slightly more pleasing in the recoil department. I'll have to try an HK to make a definative statement though.

The best advice I think would be to try a plastic gun at the range before you buy. If you were a bit closer to me I would volunteer mine. You should have no problems finding someone with a polymer gun at your range who will give you a go...

As far as the original question- .45 all the way buddy! Sure it is a bit more expensive for the ammo, but as Stevo points out those big ass holes in the paper are really easy to see....and so satisfying to make.:D . Besides our mags only hold 10 by law so I say stuff the biggest rounds you can in those things.

i heard reloading 40 can be tricky? something about the pressure effects on the casing?

Not sure who told you this, but .40 is the same as any other cartridge for reloading.. Stick with published formula's, or work up a load using standard practices, and you are fine.. Just like any other caliber..

BTW: I reload only .40's and only intend on pickup up 40's, but I do get the occasional .45's and 9's.. if you count the ratio of brass that shows over/wornout pressure signs (eg cracks) 45 would appear to have more problems then 40's I've seen 20X more cracked 45's then 40's.

I have a plastic gun in 9mm and don`t want to buy another 9mm so I will try out a few hopefully see what I like the best between 40/45

That may have more to do with the grip angle and the height of bore axis than the material the frame is made out of......

Hori we shoot wednesdays and fridays (ipsc practice)your welcome to come out and try them.
sorry i'm sick and should have told you earlier..
in Lunenburg call Gerry....

Hori,
go with the mighty 45. the rest can come later. if your the kind of guy who wants to keep your guns in the future and the same time enjoy shooting.

I don't think the .40 is anywhere close to the 9mm. The 9mil is closer to a .38.

Yes there are similarities between 9mm & .40, some 9mm loads are very comparable to .38 and some of the hotter ones are certainly not. But he isn't looking to buy a .38, he said he was looking for a .40 or .45 and since he has a 9mm the .45 was suggested to being the most different to shoot.

Ok Hori was to the range tonight and got to try a few different guns ,
i know what he's picked do you....40 or 45

let's hear what you think .
when he's on again he can tell you his choice..lol

I liked the BOOM, the recoil was ok, and being able to see your target holes from distance:D So it`s 45 for me, thanks to Trigger Finger, Eh Class and all the guys at the range tonight
