looking for shot timer

Someone, please, please, please tell RUReady and CED guys to add an interface, so their timers could wirelessly talk to Android/iPhone devices...

It is 2012... memorizing multiple strings, splits and a lot more of other fancy stuff is much easier and handier to do on a multipurpose computer...

I've got to agree with you on that dude. the CEDPro should be able to do that with the wireless module they have coming for it.

Heh. From what I've seen and heard already, CEDpro looks like a failure...

Keep things simple. A stupid and reliable yellow brick that feeds all the data outside would be a better option.

Hmmm, well the Pact timers already have a download cable and port for transferring the strings to a computer, and it stores in memory over a hundred strings....or at least I've never maxed it out...

Not much useful to a scorer RO who is walking behind one holding a timer. I dont suppose you want to use a cable between them? :)

Ideally the time (or even all splits) are sent to the scoring device (eg. Android or iphone running PractiScore) then scorer just tap an accept button instead of twisting his neck trying to read time from the timer while main RO is clearing competitor's gun...

Another neat feature would be to allow remote starting devices. Eg push a button or open a door or step on a pressure plate to start the stage... I remember there was some hacked ruready timers at 2009 nationals at Halifax. Though ro had to disconnect the wire after competitor moved from the starting position.

ps: sorry for stealing OP thread...

That's all been done before, for years the US nationals in Quincy had self start and computer driven stages (stage starts when a pressure pad is pushed or stepped on, computer activated targets on a repeating cycle of appear/disappear with each target having a different timing, all pneumatic driven) Jack Payne wired a timer to a door years ago ('92) that started and stopped the timer when you opened and closed the door, can't stop the timer that way anymore, has to be last shot. Again Pact timers can be used as they have ports specifically for this.

I wouldn't be surprised if a future version of PractiScore had an integrated shot timer. The hardware is all there in smartphones and tablets to facilitate it, it just lacks the software.

For my own info as well as the OP's, and to try and get this thread back on track....

If you had to choose between the RUReady and CED 7000 (not the pro) which would you go with?
I'm in need of a timer as well.

All the pact timer's I've seen are huge (maybe I've only seen the older models) so I'm really not leaning towards that brand.

Any others out there that have favourable reviews?

Currently leaning towards the CED7000 due to size and aesthetics.

Need two devices because stages are run by RO and score keeper, two people...

Also, maybe I am wrong, but there are issues with hardware and software, at least on Android platform (e.g. differences in microphone sensitivity between devices, and software issues that don't allow real-time sound processing).

All in all, a good old timer with an interface to scoring device is likely a more reliable solution.

Once the course of fire is finished (and time is recorded) could the RO not hand off the device to the scorekeeper?

Not all Androids are equal, for sure.

I went with RUReady because I had read some negative reviews about CED's stuff, and every single IPSC match I had ever been at was using RUReady, which I figured must have been for some kind of reason.

Things may have changed since.

CED's timers definitely have more features... I've debated getting one just for solo practice.

For matches I like ruready because it is much louder and also activates on a button release (ced activates on push).

But for practice ced 7000 is probably the easiest choice. Especially because it allows 0.1 sec increments in PAR time mode.

Not really practical. For scoring you need device with a large enough screen (7in or more). It is too big to carry when running behind competitor.

Actually, ideally it need to be a wearable watch-size mike with remote interface to a scoring device. So, RO will have his hands free in case he need to act on something.

PractiScore is surprisingly useable on an iPhone, and that's smaller than an RUReady timer.

What you describe is more ideal, sure, but I think it could be made to work with the current tech.

Yeah, the RU Ready tuners are great for matches but very limited for practice (next to useless) you need at least .10 increments on par time to be effective. I like the pact because with the full key pad the par time can be adjusted down to .010, it also has the adjustable beep, comstock go, ballistic calc, rate of fire (full auto...lol) and lead calculator for moving targets as well as built in chronograph.
There's a reason you see guys like TGO and Jerry Miculek wearing them...

So, how many of those features you actually using for real, other then bragging that your timer could cook dinner for you? :)

The reason is probably that they are shooting so long that nothing else existed at the time... :D

I've used all but the full auto rate of fire timer, sadly this winter I had the chance to even use that when I was shooting a full auto C8 but I forgot to bring my timer...lol
I have all the chrono parts, sky screens etc, I have drills that use comstock go like the Double Draw Master drill, I use the par time for dry fire as well as in te range, the ballistic calc is useful on long shot (like this past Waterloo match....lol) and the lead calc is useful for training for the Action Pistol/Bianchi Cup Mover event.
And as far as TGO or JM, when you win as many titles as they have, I think they have some idea of what good training gear is.
