Hi all,

I am looking to put a decent scope on my new rifle (Rem 700SPS) but there are so many out there. I don't want to spend more then $200 if possible. Anyone know of a good scope in that price range.

Thanks,

You might get a decent used scope for $200 not a "good new scope"

For a guy on a budget, you can beat the Bushnell Elite Series, used will run you around $200 in fact I have an Elite 3200 3-9X40 (firefly reticle) that I am thinking of parting with $200 sounds about right.
The Elite 4200 is slightly better, runs about another $100-$200 on top of the price of a 3200
Now I am sure guys on here will tell you not to buy a Bushnell but I have seen alot of scope and for the money these work great, hold their zero and are quite clear. I would however avoid the cheaper Bushnells.

I agree with billc68, getting a deal on a good used scope is the way to go. Most of the better scopes today have lifetime warranties. A bushnell, Leupold or Burris are easy to repair in North America and they are solid companies with good reputations. If on the other hand you want to buy new look at the 3200 series from Bushnell or Leupold Rifleman.

Gander Mountain has Nikon ProStaff with BDC for $159, there is a store in Rochester, NY. Leupold VX-I should be in $230 range.
ProStaff is the scope I have and it's pretty nice.

Save Your Christmas money, In all honesty, a scope is more important than the rifle your putting it on. If you go used, go for the advise above. Look for a Burris or a bushnell 3200 or 4200 series or a leupold M8 or Vari X II or III. I don't know how good a deal can be found on a Vari X III though. The warranties are lifetime on all (someone correct me if I'm wrong; leupold for sure). If the $200 range is all you can afford right now & you gotta have new, my 2 cents would be the Tasco 2.5-10x varmit scope. It has mildots, target turrets, adjustable objective and not bad lenses.

I'd take a Leupold Rifleman before a Tasco product. At least with the Leupold you can turn the power past 6x and still see clearly. That hasn't been my experience with the cheapo Tasco's that have come mounted on various rifles I've purchased.

I agree I would choose anything Leupold over a Tasco. But the Varmit scope that mentioned is not "bad". I Have used it & not had the problem you mentioned. Will not speak for all Tasco product, but this is a decent entry level scope that is considerably cheaper than a Leupold Rifleman & I'm not sure if this guy wants to put out more than $200

I guess it depends on your intended purpose for the rifle/scope. If you give a few more details the guys on here might be able to help you out. What are you using this for....targets, hunting, ?? What magnification do you want, do you want fixed mag or variable? Do you want mildots? What distances do you shoot?

There are tons of value priced scopes out there, Bushnell 3200 10x Nikon Buckmaster, Burris FFII, etc. Really depends on your intended use. Used is often a good way to go if you are trying to save money.

I have to side with the folks that say to not go cheap on a scope.

I've spent just as much money on a scope as I have on a rifle in the past.

The higher-end scopes tend to retain their value as well.

Unless you need it right now, I would wait unitl you can get to the 300 +tax bracket. If you are looking for new you can start getting into some quality scopes like leupold, weaver, bushnell etc. Really its not that much more but the increase in quality you get compared to walmart scopes is much more than the $100 would seem.

What caliber?

There are lots of product to choose from that is less than $200.00, and if your the kind of fellow that looks after stuff well, an less exp. product may serve you well. Bushnell Banner dusk to dawn series are ok and well below $200.00, Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 are $139.00 ish.
Don't for get rings and bases will add to your cost.
I have a 204 Ruger and I put one of the new BSA chinese made 6-18's on top and it shoots great, for well under $200.00. FS
