Picked up this sks today. Bought it off the EE. It's a 1950 Tula sks, I asked the seller if it was refurbed with a chrome barrel or if it had the original non chrome lined barrel. He replied that it is chrome lined.

It does not appear to be Chrome lined. Any way to tell for sure? The filthy muzzle is hidden behind a muzzle break and I can't see it very well.

Also, in the ad the seller mentioned that it is always cleaned extensively after each use. Baloney. I've never cleaned a dirtier bore. I mean it is unbelievable. I'm letting it soak overnight.

Lastly, the handguard is so loose I'm not sure what to do about it. Perhaps take it apart and epoxy it to take up the slack? Any ideas there? Will it affect accuracy?

Hang on, that wasn't the last thing. He also forgot to mention that "someone" embedded a friggin RUSSIAN BADGE THiNGY of some kind INTO the timbersmith stock... WTF???

I mean... Does this warrant a negative Trader rating? I for one would have been pretty upfront about disclosing those things. Especially the bloody thing in the stock.

figure the time to fix up and attach a value, share with the seller and see where it goes, if you can not come to any agreement return it, by chance did you coy and save the original listing?

I did Infact take a screenshot of the original post. His trader rating was low but all good. Still made me nervous, never felt the need to do that before but glad I did.

The thing that peeves me the most is not mentioning the badge laid into the stock. But I'm also a little miffed that the barrel isn't Chrome lined and was filthy. Doesn't appear to be damaged that I can see yet. And I'm pretty sure I can stiffen up the handguard with epoxy.

Just irritates me when I get surprises I hadn't expected. Ya know?

To answer some of your questions: After you have the bore cleaned up good, it will either be fairly reflective chrome or the normal metal
appearance of a good or bad bore, depending on whether the bore is good or bad. My chrome lined barrels have a kalaedescopic effect as well.

The loose top handguard is fairly normal and won't affect accuracy as much as all the other detractors of accuracy inherent to the SKS.;)

Any chance you want to send me that neat Russian badge?

Based on how long it's taking to clean, I'm guessing it's not Chrome lined. 1950's weren't so I'm not surprised, but disappointed since the seller said it was.

And that Russian badge is inletted and epoxied into the stock. I'm just gonna leave it in.

Honestly I like the badge in the stock, looks pretty cool. That said I'd be pissed if I wasn"t expecting it. If the seller said chrome and there's no chrome demand your money back. That's false advertising plain and simple.
Negative trader rating would be a given. You didn't get what you paid for!

He pretty much ruined a $250 Timbersmith stock with the... creative badge work (which seems was not dislosed before you bought the gun), and 1950 SKS'es bores are not chromed. And with a dirty bore, I wonder what shape the gas tube is? I would hope the seller would be willing to buy it back with full reimbursement?

One way to check for a chromed lined bore on shotguns is to rub a little cold blue in the end of the bore. If it turns the bore a bluish color then it is not chrome lined. If it rubs off it is chrome. Can you put a bit in the end of the bore?
I would be peeved upon inspecting the gun as well and would be asking about sending the gun back if you couldn't live with the stock the way it is.

Check the second smaller piston and it's channel as well... here's hoping there aren't further surprises there...

Also, full disclosure was not provided...that equals a negative trader rating in my book.

Mike, The handguard can be snugged up using a rubber band. I used the trick on my first LE No4. Cut a thick, wide rubber band into two pieces and use them as compression spacers in the gaps between the forestock and handguard. A wide gap may require a couple of rubber bands to attain the desired thickness.

use a Q tip from the end

It's got a muzzle brake on it and I can barely see the end of the barrel. But there is no sign of Chrome in the chamber, and after a dozen or so patches and 60 something strokes with a brush the patches are still coming out fouled.

I don't know what to do about it to be honest. How big of a deal is it that the bore isn't Chrome lined?

If you were looking for it, it's a swindle. If you are asking about it from a maintenance standpoint, just keep it clean. The other parts of the rifle where gas gets into are not chrome lined and need to be taken care of so it's not that much more to add a little extra elbow grease into the bore.

If the bore is still good, there is no problem with non-chromed. You would be telling us about rust right now if the bore was ruined from shooting
corrosive ammo without cleaning it. Probably the guy used non-corrosive and it just needs a good cleaning with a few soakings of oil.

Well... In his OP he said round count was about 700 milsurp ammo. But he also said he cleaned it well after each use.

The gas tubes are both clean and rust free. But the bore is super grimey. Honestly I don't know if I've even got it down to the metal yet to see if it's rusty/pitted. I'm going to have another go at it at work tomorrow. And I asked if it was chromed and he said it was. Honestly I wouldn't care much if the bore was clean, but in several dozen used guns I've purchased, I've never had so many dirty patches come out of the bore. Nothing obviously rusty looking, just black crap and lots of it.

Sounds like you are trying to make a borderline deal better by your own efforts. I would not be happy with the "medal" in the stock. I would not be happy about the no-chrome barrel. If you are still on the fence, save the solvent and start with boiling water and the air compressor if you want to keep it. You don't deserve this but you have to either accept or change the feedback score asap and demand satisfaction.
