So I melted my boots camping on the long weekend. Now I'm looking o buy a new pair of boots. I'll be using these for upland from late Oct to Feb when bunnies seasons over, and again in spring for turkey.

My buget is sub-200. What are some of your favorites?

I found a pair of Danners grandslam (I think) at Cabelas for 100 bucks, worth the risk of buying online?

I also melted my rockies(good boots) on the long weekend.
Danners or Irish setters are in my plans. It's way worth spending the extra money,as I have never regreted buying good boots.Cheaper boots are another story.

New boots are in my plans as well... Hope to get a few good suggestions myself.
I've heard you definitely don't want to cheap out on them.

Danner boots are very good IMHO. I have had a couple of pairs over the years and have recommended them to a number of friends, and I would not hesitate to buy them again.

I own a pair of Danner lites, now discontinued. They are a great boot, very comfortable and I've had them since 2001. The soles are very aggresive yet durable. I tend to drag my heels and that's always the first spot to wear, yet there's hardly any wear on my Danners. Even though their the Lite, I have them oversized so I can wear heavy socks and they are good even in the cold. The material is top quality and has held up great over the years. I put alot of miles on these, since I don't have a quad I have to walk in. They are great and I have no problem recommending them to anyone. I am however looking still to replace them with somthing a bit taller and the Danner Canadian or similar is looking good.

I bought a pair of Brownig camo rubber boots with no insulation for spring and early fall. It took awhile to break them in. They have a good agressive tread but the rubber is cracking everywhere the boot bends causing a flood in the boots when in water. They were $150 boots and only lasted 1/2 a season so avoid these.

I've got a pair of Rocky BearClaws 800gr, that I've had for 8 years, one of the best presents I ever got.;) They're not as warm as they used to be, but they're great for spring and fall hunts.

I bought a pair of Irish Setter Raptors 1200g, on clearance 2 years ago, for the colder hunts. Both pair were under $200 at the time.

I am not a big fan of the Rocky brand boots. Had a pair, and the soles split apart in less than half a season, tried getting a refund, but dealing with Rocky was a no go.

The Irish Setters that I bought 3 seasons ago, just started to leak this spring, they have been hunted hard, and I am going to buy another pair. They are 600 gram and perfect for walking around, nice and light, and warm. Not so good for the tree stand.

Would like to try the Danners if I could find a dealer in SW Ontario.

I currently have a pair of Irish Setter, elk stalkers. They are the only pair of sub $200, boots that I have been able to wear all day, and the next day too. Fits extremely well and comfortable from day one.

Avoid buying on-line ....... I won't buy boots that I can't try one 1st. Too much size variation among the makers. I have a pair of sz10 Brownings that are almost too big requiring heavy socks to fill and a pair of Danners same size that I can't wear anything but the lightest sock in.

Avoid Danner Pronghorns

I have Danner Prong horns and I highly recommend that you do not buy them. The first pair leaked really bad. I sent them back to Danner, who are really good to deal with, they sent me a brand new pair, those new ones leak as well. I am not going through the trouble or hassle of returning them again.

I will definetly look for something that has a solid leather exterior as opposed to the mix of material used in the pronghorns.

my two cents anyway.

Should also be looking at either Meindl's, Hanwag's, or Lowa's, all very good boots. Don't cheap out! You will only regret it later!!

Best advice in the thread so far.

My old Zamberlians will be needing replacement soon, I'll be looking for something from one of these four manufacturers. They are in a much better class of boot IMO.

Good Luck.

What do you guys think about rubber boots as a 3 season hunters? I just picked up turkey hunting this year, and seems like everywhere I go from Ottawa to the GTA, it's swampy EVERYWHERE!! I figure that rubber would keep my feet wet, but are they comfortable? How are they in January bumping grouse and rabbits?

Thanks again.

I have 3 pairs of the cabelas outfitter series boots... one pair of the 1000 gr that I wear daily for work here outdoors in our manitoba winters, one pair of the 800 gr. for early season upland hunting, and one pair of the 1000 gr for deer hunting and late season upland. Great boots, hold together well, and gor-tex lined. 1000 gr run around 159.99, in stock at the winnipeg cabela's store.

Elk Tracker - I am using mine for the second season.

Comfortable and great support for long walk and yet warm enough for sitting in a stand. :D
