hey guys,

i just picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical during Le Baron's 18% off sale. i would like to avoid purchasing various bullet weights because they are quite expensive so im wondering what weight i should buy right off the bat? i will be using CFE223 so im also wondering what your preferred load is with that.

thanks in advance. :)

I had an SPS tactical in 308. It liked 168gr Hornady A-Max bullets with 41.5gr IMR4064 or H4895.
I got really nice grouping with it.
_FYI_ I had a B&C Stock, and Timney trigger installed.

To use for what type of shooting? Cheap, usually accurate, 150gr SSTs from Hornady. Can use for hunting too.

Chineseguy The above advice is not wrong. Not saying there is anything wrong with 223 CFE powder but Varget is very hard to beat in the 308 for accuracy and top velocity. With a 150 gr bullet start at 43 grs of Varget and work up to about 47 grs watching for signs of excessive pressure. I have never seen a 308 that didn't like 47 grs of Varget and a 150 gr bullet.

thanks guys. so it looks like a toss up between 150gr and 168gr.

i will be using it strictly for target as i dont hunt big game.

i have a timney two stage trigger installed and will be getting a MDT HS3 chassis in the upcoming weeks.

For target shooting 155gr scenars are great. TR shooters group 155's them just fine.
I use 175gr Scenar L's for FTR, great bullets too. Not sure what's best for that CFE223 powder though, lots of N150 and Varget usually.

Don't be tied to the powder you have unless you have tried and failed to get the commonly used powders in 308. It doesn't go bad, you can use it in the future for another application, and other shooters may trade with you. $50 for a pound of Varget is a small expense.

I've built up a load using the Hornady 150gr BTSP and CFE-223. 50gr gets me about 2850fps in my 18.5" Scout, but they group better at 48.5gr . My wife's 22" barreled TC Venture pushes them about 2925fps with 50gr and tends to group them better (sub MOA), it's a 5R barrel.

i managed to pick up 2 pounds of varget and 1 pound of h4895 to try. i think im going to try some Frontier 168gr bullets and see how that goes.

I'm currently using CFE223 (43gr) for my Savage 10TR + 180gr SPEER grand slam. I don't have a chronograph to measure the velocity.

Mixed brass trim length of 2.005, and COL of 2.74.
