Looking for specific characteristics in a round

I am planning on a new rifle build in a 30 cal, but have some basic requirements. I do not care if it is common, new or old design...

1: Must not have a short neck. I want a good grip on loaded bullets.

2: No smaller than 308 but no larger than 300 WM, nothing that kicks like a 600NE but not so small as to be useless for medium/long range.

3: Whatever rifle I decide on for said cartridge must have long enough magazine to handle very long bullets seated in the case.

4: Must be rimless, rebated rim, or even belted but prefer one of the first two, no rimmed cartridges.



These are requirements that are a MUST! Other things I can work around, I have many other rifles to play with for whatever I NEED. I am wanting a 30 cal handloaders dream... at least my dream anyway...

Guess what? The US military designed and built the cartridge you describe, in 1906 and called it a 30 calibre(06,) 30-06 for short.
 
Ok, and what rifle chambered in 30-06 has a large enough magazine to hold a 210 VLD that is seated to engage the lands?
 
The point is I want to have the option, most of my rifles are limited in COAL by the magazine unless I single shot it! I want a 30 cal in an action that does not limit me as a reloader, without it being a 30-378 or 30 whisper.
 
.308 Norma Magnum. No feeding problems, no headspace problems as it's a belted case. Brass are easy to reform from .338 WM without any further work than resize the neck load and shoot. It's also a case desgin that won many long distance shooting prizes.
 
It is hard to beat the ought six I guess, and since I do not own one.... Maybe I'll check out a few different makes to find one with the criteria I have.


Hmmm, maybe a Cooper with the longer action is in my near future....
 
The Remington 700 Long Action magazine is very long, [3.680"], and will accomodate that VLD nicely.
If it was me, I would be following Baribal's advice....308 Norma Mag. My favorite 30 cal.

30-06 is the one u desire in my savage 110 their is so much magazine space it will hold 300 weatherby rounds .with 180 gr 30-06 i seat them to the max the neck will allow
 
So, all I need to do now is find a quality action, get a med/heavy barrel 22" long with a nice tight chamber, find a NICE plank, then find a good smith to piece it all together!



Or maybe a 30-06 AI!!! hmmm
 
Just curios, but what did you plan on shooting ? Sounds like long range something or other. I've heard a lot of bad things about the VLD for game but probably very good for target shooting. A lot of hype on TV about long range game shooting. Personally I don't agree with it but that's just me. I don't think your 22" barrel is a good idea if you want to get everything out of any magnum. My hunting partner has a old model 70 chambered in 300 Weatherby that he used here and in Africa on game up and including Cape buffalo. I'm favoring the 30-06 or something like the 300H+H or a 303 British. Famous for long range shooting. Many claim better than the 30-06. Oh right you don't want a rim. :cheers:
 
Long range on game is 400 yards max for me, but my range is almost double that. It is for my own personal enjoyment, both shooting and reloading!
 
Get a Win M-70 or Remington 700 long action--swap the magazine box for a 375 H + H length mag try mag length follower and go from there. On a controlled feed rifle you might have to cut back the ejector. Assuming a 30-06 cartrige.
