Looking for suggestions for a new gun.

A friend of mine and I are looking to buy a pair of new rifles and figured this is the best place to get a real honest opinion.
Here's the details of what we're looking for:

Purpose: Shooting stuff, plinking, varmint.
Caliber: We're not set into a caliber yet but strongly leaning towards the .223 because the rounds are a lot cheaper.
Price range: less than 1000$, preferably even less.(duh)
Action: much preferably a bolt.

We're open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance for reading/responding :)

Your on the right track, I would get something different than your friend , just for the sake of trying different makers. You can still stay in the same cal range.
Like 22 hornet, 22 WMR , 222, 223, 204 ...CZ , Browning, Winchester, Remmy, to mention a few of the bolt guns, Oh I got a .223 for sale, its awesome, with all the goodies, :D had to mention it ;) Oh go to gun shops , find the fit you like, then buy wherever you wish.

I'm also getting ready to buy a 223, and I'll choose between the Remington 700 VLS and the Savage 12VLP.

Check them out, the Savage is a little more than the Remington, but it has the Accutrigger, where I'd probably replace the trigger in the Rem anyway...
 
I want a 223 to.Im waithing for the Rem with the Mini-mauser action to hit the stores.No price tag on the yet.
