I am looking for a 20ga. for Upland. I have a 12ga. pump but thought of getting something a little lighter, with potential that it may be something that my wife could use when we head out with our dog.

My current thinking and price range has led me to the following options.. looking for input

1. Stevens Goldwing O/U
2. Stoeger Condor or Uplander combo in 12/20ga.
3. Used Beretta 300 series
4. Used Remington model 11
5. New or used Reminton SPR SXS or 11-87

Thoughts/opinion/experiences.... ?

Get a Franchi 48AL. (Lightest semi-auto in the world)!!! 5 1/2 lbs in 20 gauge I believe. Time proven and tested. I have a 12 gauge in same model, and love the thing. Excellent for upland, can carry it all day. An over/under though does feels better when shouldered and when you swing (Very balanced).

upland

I agree with the other posts -- check out the guns in your price range & buy the one that fits. Upland guns should be light in weight for carrying. you might want to consider a lightweight semi If your wife isn't used to recoil. The Goldwing and the Condor are 20's built on a 12 gauge frame -- they carry and swing like 2x4 lumber. If you are looking at light weight 20, O/U's -- the CZ Bobwhite and the Yildiz SPZM wont bust your budget. Between these 2, I would lean towards the Yildiz because of the availability of parts.
Cheers/luck

Have to agree with you Sportsmam4X4,the Franchi 48 Al is tops in the uplands.I have two 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL's and they are my favourite autoloaders for upland use.Light and very dependable.

There is a nice SKB O/U 20 gauge in he EE.
At least there was yesterday.....

Nice, well balanced, strong action to weight ratio,
black chrome plated on the outside.

Single selective trigger, safety right where it should be.

If you can find one the older "Ithaca" SKB SXS,
model 100 or 200 SE, they are equally nice.
Especially if one can find a 25 inch SXS, with IC and Modified chokes.

Now yes these are no longer made,
but CZ makes a nice SXS variant called the Bobwhite I think?

What's not to like?

The Franchi 48AL is dated but still very nice, it even comes in 28ga. My pick would be a Benelli Montefeltro in 20ga., one of the nicest handling guns I've picked up, also comes with a "youth" stock which would be good for the wife. Ultimately the best thing to do is pick up as many, and if possible shoot as many as you can before deciding.

I love my 20g Beretta 391.....

But don't forget that a 20g can kick just as hard as a 12g depending on the loads, weight of the gun, etc.
I would seriously consider looking at a .410, if it is just for grouse.

Otherwise, I vote for the 391! :)

Below is the 391 Gold, with black receiver.

I have a .410 SXS that I love. The purpose would mainly be for general all-around upland. Hopefully my wife picks up the hobby now that we have our dog getting out more. To be honest it will probably end up as my gun more than the wife's:D

I had a chance to buy a Beretta A301 - but not sure about the condition and price.

I liked the Remington Model 11, but missed one at Paris this past Saturday.

The 11-87 would let me switch barrels for deer too?????? :D

If I don't get a semi it will be another SXS. SPR220, Bobwhite, Stoeger, Yildiz looks like a nice option.

All a matter of presonal preferance I would say...
I have plenty of semi-automatic rifles, and more than one pump action M37, with one hinge action shotgun.

I just never had a semi-automatic shotgun appeal to me...
To each his own!
Cheers.......................;)

What about a coachgun SXS with 20" barrels?

The semi idea would be more for my wife with the idea to help her with recoil.

Beretta boy, I was hoping you'd have told me the approx. value of a used A301..

Not to rail road this post, but Grouser you mentioned that availability of Yuldiz parts, where? I'm in the market for a 20 ga. SXS and have long past considering the Yuldiz just exactly for that reason. People who have purchased the SXS in the U.S. last year cannot get parts. I'd keep that in mind Ryanloco in your search.

I think most SXS I've looked at are about 6lbs + a bit... The Yildiz A5 is approx. 5lbs which is nice.. The Remington SPR and the CZ both have removeable chokes and double triggers which I like. I've seen prices for the Remington for $395 which is pretty hard to beat.

Hey, I know its not on your list but I seen a gun in a local shop last weekend, and I just loved they way it felt an looked. I had have had the cash it would have came home with me. It was a baikal 20ga SxS with the nickel receiver. Ive been dreaming about it ever since, I have no idea if they are any good or not I just know it was my style. Also it had a full set of interchangable chokes and a selectable single trigger.

Good idea.. I missed the Baikal - but it's pretty easy to bump them onto the list.

I'd love to see a 20ga. semi option from Baikal !!

Is the Remington SPR - really a re-branded Baikal?????

I love a long-recoil gun, like my 16ga Rem11, but I have yet to find an AL48 anywhere in Canada in the last 18months, so not so high on the list for me. You can find 20ga Auto5s around, but they are not light, really. Just strong like tank.

My personal prejudices run to a nice SxS 20ga, extractors, dbl triggers, man safety, splinter forearm and pistol grip stock. I had a Baikal of this description many moons back and loved it. Now I have its cousin in 16ga, and love it even more. Both guns date to 1967 manufacture, though.

There is fun to be had in the search and more to be had in the ownership.
