Looking for Tobin SxS Shotgun Info

Hi I'm fairly new to here but have been lurking for quite awhile.
I have a friend that has a Tobin Side by Side Shotgun. It is missing the butt stock but the rest of it is intact. I am trying to find out any info I can for him on this but am not having much luck on Google. I am trying to find out what the exact production year is , where it was made (it says Tobin Manufacturing of Woodstock so I am guessing that is where it was made)and what it is worth. Can any one in the know give us any of this info or guide me to a site or sites where I can get the info
I can't find any serial numbers visible (can you tell me where to look) but the firearms registration card has a number of 18693. Any help with information on this gun would be greatly appreciated

In addition, David J. Noreen (known as Researcher on the Doublegunshop BBS) has published articles on Tobin in the Double Gun Journal. He probably knows more about Tobins than anyone else.

Oops, got beat to the punch! In any case the serial number would be on the trigger guard tang, missing on your gun.

Thanks for the replies so far I checked out the sites but I still have not found the specific info I am seeking. Does anyone know how to contact David Noreen I Google'd his name but came up with lots of different David's. Where is he located or does anyone know any members on this site that know allot about Tobin Firearms

Mr. Tobin was an American shotgun maker who moved his operation to Woodstock Ontario, so there are American & Canadian Tobins. There were several grades (some Tobins are quite ornate) the one you have seems to be one of the lower grade ones. Just a guess on my part but about $125 or so would the worth of what you have, all there perhaps about $250. FWIW --- John303.
 
Further info. (don't quote me), Norwich Conn. 1903 to 1909 - serial #s up to 11089. Woodstock 1909 to 1951 - serial #s 11090 to 19526. 18693 about 1948? or so. HTH --- John303.
 
Tobin was actually a Canadian who moved to the US when he first started producing shotguns. Later he decided to move back to Canada and started making guns here. There was a Tobin shotgun on EE a few months back. The price had been lowered to $599.00 and I still don't think it sold--not on this site anyway.
 
Looks like a standard grade model 40. Probably 80ish years old. There should be several places where the ser. number is visible (barrel flats for sure). Is it missing the trigger guard as well as the stock? Getting parts like those would be very difficult. Getting them made would cost 3x more than the gun is worth. Is it 12 ga or 16 ga? FYI, it is probably "short chambered" at 2 5/8".

FWIW, I think they are cool guns. Not exactly an engineering marvel but they are Canada's only SxS maker as far as I know and I own two. I just finished fixing up a 16ga model 55 "Black Diamond". 16ga.com has some info on them.

Your friend's gun is not worth a lot as a shooter...might be a good parts gun though...how are the barrrels? Is the action tight?

I am not sure how the action is on it and also not sure on the gauge as it is not here at my place . I know that my friend said the actions worked but I didn't ask him at the time if it was tight or not, mind you we don't know enough about guns to know what tight is. I will check into it further. The trigger guard is missing on this gun. He was thinking of getting it fixed but if if it was going to cost him more then what it was worth , he may just end up selling it as a parts gun. Thanks

I might be interested in it as a parts gun if it is in decent shape...don't go on my opinion alone though. Tell him to look into it if he wants to fix it up.;)
