looking for vary accurate 22

You can't go wrong with a 10/22. Decent accuracy out of the box and they are the 5.0L Mustang of the rimfire world; everybody has one and everybody makes aftermarket parts for them.
 
Winchester 52s, Rem 40x Anshutz 54 they will run you the north side of $1000 for a nice one. then there the tricked out Suhls like Eagle Eye shoots if you want ultimate accuracy
for a Rimefire but I would think you would be well on Nortside of $ 3k.
and don,t let anyone tell you the Savages & CZ are better than above or the 10/22 rugers

He said very accurate. 10/22 can manage tea saucer at 50 but not much better.

Marlin for excellent accuracy for dirt cheap, CZ is you can go a bit higher in the price range. 10/22 if you want to buy a rifle with crap accuracy, then buy a new barrel to actually give it a chance.
 
For a bolt action tactical .22, take a look at the Savage TR - seriously accurate, very "tactical" looking ("TR" means "tactical rifle" in Savages), and reasonably priced. You could buy one, outfit it with some excellent glass, and still stay at or below your budget.

As for semi auto, there's always the Ruger SR22, or maybe a 10/22 with one of the excellent tacticool kits - again, either way, you'd have enough left over to mount some excellent glass on it, and stay at or below your budget. Personally, I'm a fan of the 10/22 & tactical kit - you can still change it to anything you want, any time you want. Kit installations are all pretty much reversible. Plus, you can customize the kitted gun even more if you like. As others have said here, there are more accessories for the Ruger 10/22 than probably any other gun currently made.
 
I would look at a CZ452 or 455. For the money, they are the nicest finished and most accurate 22's in my opinion. I own a 452 American and it is a gorgeous rifle. I'm no sharp shooter, but off the bench 5 shot groups of CCI Standard into 1 ragged hole are boringly repeatable! :p

Move the target back until it's not so boring.
 
If you want to spend $500 get a 452/455, if you want to spend $2000 get a Cooper.
While there are rifles "in between" that range, there are none that I would personally bother with. Both options represent "you get what you pay for".
 
If you want accuracy, also count on spending more than $20 a brick on ammo. For accuracy, get into the $50-60 a brick stuff.....

I was gonna mention that as well. Also, just because you have a supposedly accurate rifle, it doesn't make you Matthew Quigley. When I first started hunting/shooting 20 years ago, there were some old timers in my camp that could out shoot guys with fancy riles and scopes using their iron sights. Get a quality rifle, quality ammo and shoot, that's how you get accurate. Good luck!
