Hi Fellow gun Nuts

I just got my restricted and I am looking at a few pistols, I am looking at a norinco Woodsman copy now I realize that this is a cheap pistol but I am only looking for something for me and my wife to learn pistol handling and for reliable cycling. Can I get opinions on this pistol from people who have them or who have shot them etc.

I am also looking at joining the Manitoba defensive pistol league entry requirement 9mm minimum, I Found the glock 22 looks like a good choice but there are so many 9mm options could everyone give there opinion on a cheaper 9mm in the no greater than 600 dollar range that can be upgraded, and accessorized, and reliable.

thanks guys and gals looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello!
Norinco Woodsman it's not bad at all for "pliking" but it's better for you to to look at a Ruger Mark III. It's more accurate and reliable. For 9mm, I own a Beretta 92 and a CZ-85 . I love both but the CZ fit better with me.

My choices for a $600 9mm would be a S&W M&P, a Glock 17, or one of the CZ75 variants. Oh, and +1 for the Ruger or maybe a Browning...you could probably find a used only on the EE here. You've got the right idea to get started with a .22LR. Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Buy a .22 conversion kit and your choice of centrefire pistol.

Beware the man with one gun.

i have a glock 19 and love it. the 17 is great as well.

it was my first gun and it can be field stripped and detail stripped VERY easily. brought me a lot of confidence. some people love glocks others dont...i am from the former bunch....:runaway:

for your wife the 19 might fit her hands better....see if she can hold one or rent it at a range.

Since you said your wife will be shooting you may be interested in the family rate at Winnipeg Revolver & Pistol. $250 per year for both of you. There is an initial fee of $150 to join though.

I bought a one just so I have a .22 handgun. Don't have any problems with it;

Mine is 100% reliable with Fed. Champion plated ammo but was jammomatic with Win Dynapoints (haven't tried anything else). The sights are kinda small, but accuracy and trigger pull are not bad at all. Overall for the price it's a great value IMO!

For a centerfire I'd pass on the G22 (or any other .40) and get a Beretta, M&P or a Sig...

what do you guys think of rugger pistols nice looking and 100's$ cheaper ????

<--- I bought a Ruger for my 1st gun because I heard alot of good things about them. Unfortunatly, I can't give a review as I am waiting on my RPAL so it's still being stored at P&D.:(

I have Ruger Mark II out on loan to a club member. I let him borrow it about two years ago. Its about time I get it back. I will let you borrow it for half a year if you want. This would be a better choice to learn on than the Norinco (and I don't have anything against Norinco guns).

This will get you shooting and give you a chance to try other guns while you are shooting at the range (a lot of guys will let you try their guns if you explain your newbie situation). It is best to try different guns in order to find what works for you.

I also shoot Manitoba defensive pistol.

As far as 9mm's go Canada Ammo has (recently had) 2 certified Sig P226's for $650 each, that is an incredible deal.
