Looking into a Type 81...

The stock has no relation to the offset trunnion holes, as far as I'm aware, which is the cause behind the slightly bent rifles.
I think the folder is 'better' but if you think about swapping the stock for, say, a thumbhole stock then a fixed would probably be better for you.

It's all personal preference. The folders are supposed to be pretty good and lock up tight without much or any wiggle, but rumour has it that the folders had higher numbers of bent receivers. The fixed stock supposedly had less issues with the bend. I went with a fixed stock before I knew about the receiver bend issue simply because it had the classic AK look to it that I'm paying the premium for.

I mean, in all reality, the rifle is basically an SKS with AKish ergos and detach box mags. If you're expecting a rifle that shoots like a laser, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Worked out for me because what I was really after was the AK features and its a fun plinking gun at the range, bit on the pricey side, but hey, its cool and I like it, so it was worth it for me.

It also has the added bonus of being a bit of an eye catcher. One thing I love to do with the shooting sports is bring new people out shooting, or even bring people who aren't really into out to the range. I've always been that guy in my family, group of friends, every job I've ever worked. Since getting the Type-81, it is one of the most requested rifles to bring out that folks want to try, or get pictures with. Bonus that ammo is cheap and they can rip away down range for considerably less than a bunch of my other firearms.

Folder all the way, much handier, and the fixed stock cheek weld feels uncomfortable, the folder gets on target much faster.

That’s like asking “How longs a piece of string” ...
Everyone with a folder will say get a folder and everyone with a fixed will say get a fixed. Both will go bang when you pull the trigger and it’s not “just like an sks” it’s completely different to shoot than an sks and shares more design similarities with the ak/druganov than the sks. The recoil is different , the ergonomics are different , the field stripping is different , the manufacturing process is different. I’ve got three sks’s and none of them feel even remotely like the type 81. The only thing it really shares with an sks is the calibre. My 81 is more accurate than all three of my sks’s. Not that it’s a moa gun but it’s much more than “an sks that looks like an AK”.
Anyway whatever you choose you better get it now because as far as I can see they are going up in price on the used market and becoming hard to find new.

Oh and get a fixed stock ...unless you like your rifle looking like it’s got the handle from a garden spade for a stock hahaha

Seriously try the cheekweld of both, as looks are not really not what these are about, its about function. :) I will not keep a rifle that doesn't feel right when getting on target, sorry shot both and I will take the garden spade handle before a paddle board stock. :)
